This volume began life as a workshop-style conference on the life and times of Edward A. Freeman, held in June 2012 at the Gladstone Library, Hawarden, and the John Rylands Library, University of Manchester. In this respect, the editors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of Mark Francis and Patsy Williams, both of the Gladstone Library, and John Hodgson of the John Rylands Library. Funding for the event was gratefully received from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and the universities of Edinburgh and Southampton.

The editors also wish to thank the following individuals and institutions for their advice and assistance both during the organisation of the conference and in the preparation of the volume: the Right Reverend Wyn Evans (Bishop of St David’s), Michael Hall, Clare Hopkins (Archivist of Trinity College, Oxford), Chris Jeens (Archivist of Jesus College, Oxford), Peter Mandler, J. Mordaunt Crook, Peter Nockles, Frank Prochaska, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales/Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru, the anonymous readers who patiently reviewed and commented on the manuscript versions of each essay, and finally British Academy Publications for editorial support and guidance.
