This chapter describes research carried out in Delight and Earle. The portraiture method has been used here to investigate the roles of rural public schools in the two communities and to look at how these roles are patterned by historic racial inequalities and education politics. Portraiture is an ethnographic research method designed to capture the richness, complexity, and dimensionality of human experience in a social and cultural context. Using the technique of portraiture, two portraits of Delight and Earle are created to document their social, demographic, and historic significance.
