This chapter provides an overview of informal mediation principles and in-house mediation in Scotland. It first considers the assumption that ‘people do not wish to spend their lives in conflict’, and that conflict is bad and harmony is good. It challenges this assumption by arguing that conflict, disharmony and disagreements will occur whenever there is human interaction and exchange of ideas, and that they are not by their intrinsic nature destructive. It then explains the pros and cons of in-house mediation, when we should be resorting to this ‘mediation’ and when we need external help and expertise. To illustrate how far informal conflict resolution can go and what it can practically achieve, the chapter uses workplace situations as examples, although the principles may be applied to other areas.
