This chapter examines when and where Muslims began to add a single tall tower to the standard mosque plan. It shows that the mosques at Raqqa (without tower) and Siraf (with tower) impose the chronological limits 772–825 for the introduction of the mosque plan with a single tower opposite the qibla.
