This introductory chapter states that the book is a historical and ethnographic study of Haitian religion in Miami, based on many years of fieldwork in the city and in Haiti, as well as comprehensive research. This study aims to advance the understanding of Haitian religion, with notable contributions for two subcategories: Haitian immigrant religion in the United States, and Haitian religion approached holistically, in consideration of the three major forms of Haitian religion, namely Catholicism, Protestantism, and Vodou. Ultimately, the study makes two chief arguments. First, there can be a unifying Haitian religious collusio that underlies and transcends religious differences in the Haitian diaspora; and second, that Haitian religion is largely explicable in terms of the generation of and quest for “salvation goods” in the form of luck, magic, protection, health, prosperity, and worthiness.
