This concluding chapter sums up the key findings of this study on the nature of U.S. involvement and influence in Mexico. The relationship that evolved between the United States and Mexico beginning at the end of the American Civil War anticipated the issues of globalism that emerged during the 1990s. Mexicans should face the fact that Americans have decisively affected the history of their country from the early nineteenth century to the present. The proximity of the U.S. has also created often unrealistic hopes for a generalized prosperity for the Mexican masses in an underdeveloped and under-capitalized country that is dominated by an economic and political oligarchy.Less
