This chapter discusses another important class of systems in which ACs have been implemented. Historically, these were one of the first implementations of ACs. After a brief introduction to the general concept, a broad class of abstract automata, finite-state automata are discussed. Next are Turing machines, von Neumann machines and Cellular Automata. Examples of implementations within each of these classes follow in subsequent sections: Artificial molecular machines, Typogenetics, Polymers within the framework of Turing machines; the automata reaction, assembler automata, Coreworld, Tierra within the framework of von Neumann machines; Avida, self-replicating loops and bondable automata within the framework of Cellular Automata.Less
