In conducting HIV/AIDS social/behavioral research among men who have sex with men (MSM) today, during the first half of the twenty-first century, it is important to know about the sexual behavior of MSM. But it is unquestionably as important to understand the underlying culture of gay men. The emphasis in HIV/AIDS research on MSM has been on sexual behavior and psychological issues. Yet to better understand the social and cultural dimensions of MSM, it is essential to recognize and understand the cultures of gay men, bisexual men, transgendered men, and straight MSM. This chapter offers an overview of some of the research that has been carried out by anthropologists since the 1980s. It looks at anthropological research on MSM, HIV infection, and substance abuse; the anthropology of HIV risk, sexual behavior, and HIV prevention among MSM; anthropological research on the culture of MSM; and other anthropological research on HIV and MSM.Less
