This chapter addresses the question of how time is represented in the brain. It presents a collection of basic computing principles, focusing on algorithms that deal with sensory pattern sequences that vary over time scales from a few to a few hundred milliseconds. It shows that transmission delays, input currents that decay in time, and synaptic short-time dynamics, such as depression or facilitation, support interesting calculations in the time domain that would otherwise require much more elaborate architectures and algorithms.Less

This chapter examines the emergence of the Flood motif within the broader development of representations of the primeval time of origins in Mesopotamian traditions (primarily Sumerian) from the Early Dynastic III period to the Old Babylonian period. It is argued that when the Flood motif first emerged explicitly in Sumerian literary traditions it manifested itself as an innovative stylistic and temporal device for introducing the primeval time of origins as well as for marking the (re‐)beginning of time. Coming to grips with these initial stages of development of the Flood motif sheds important light on some key conceptual and literary processes through which the Flood motif and its mythological and chronographic representations formed and evolved in Mesopotamian traditions. This chapter also suggests that the emergence of the Flood motif was, at least in part, connected with literary and ideological responses from the early Isin dynasty to the catastrophic demise of the Ur III dynasty.Less

This chapter discusses the relation between causality and temporal sequence. Does the relation of cause to effect involve a temporal priority of cause as cause over its effect? That case is widely assumed or argued by many contemporary philosophers, especially philosophers of science. Several examples are presented in order to answer this question including that from representatives of the empirical tradition, from the philosophers of science, and from two metaphysicians.Less

This chapter discusses a handicap possessed by narrative images—that of being incapable of structuring the process of their reception as a temporal sequence. As opposed to storytelling by means of words, where the listener has no option but to allow the narrator to lead him or her through the plot and place them in a state of suspense, it is very difficult for an image to evoke such suspense in its beholders. In the late sixth century , however, Attic vase painters began developing strategies to compensate for this handicap. The problem that presents itself here concerns the relationship of images to time—although, as will be shown later in this chapter, the focus of the artists themselves was on the dramatic quality of the scene rather than the temporal aspect.Less

This chapter starts with the contemporary and the generalized definitions of the timeline; it then shifts its focus to the sampling and coding of the digital sound via spatialization of time. The chapter emphasizes the sequencer timeline, temporal sequence of sounds, and other sequences that changed the method of sound editing and manipulation. It further explains time stretching, the technique involved in changing the duration of the audio waves without disturbing the pitch. The major discussion of the chapter involves analog and digital audio signal processing with the continuity of time, and also focuses on the Gabor matrix along with the exploration of other physicists and their contributions.Less

Chapter 7 examines in detail the emotional dynamics created by the three situational paths to violence elaborated upon in Chapters 4 through 6. It discusses how these dynamics disrupt routine interactions and thereby raise tension and fear. The chapter examines how violence erupts after specific triggering moments and how violent situations end. Triggering moments include police–protester lines breaking up, people falling down, or being outnumbered. The chapter also focuses on the degree of violence used; in some protests, a specific temporal sequence of interactions leads to a forward panic and police using excessive force in so-called police riots. Detailed descriptions of protests in Germany and the United States from the 1960s until 2010 highlight that surprising outcomes occur when situational routines break down, chaos and confusion prevail, and actors are tense and afraid.Less
