This chapter takes a look at associationism and the basis of modern literary criticism. It first discusses the combination of associationism with an evolutionary perspective and the concept of ‘ideational continuum’. The chapter then considers the dependence of art on the activation of a memory, or engrams. It shows that the canon of art is also viewed as an ‘ideal continuum’ which can build relations between significant moments that have no reality in any original experience. The discussion also examines emotion, which invokes or provokes a number of associations. The chapter furthermore includes a diagrammatic form of a series of mutually interacting fibres of ‘stimulation’ which shows various kinds of associations with emotions. Poetic imagination, the symbolic structures of myth, and the recovery of ancient association are discussed.Less

In eighteenth-century Stockholm, merchants and artisans had a change in mentality that reflected a shift in the cultural frames of reference. The change was barely noticeable at first, but its effects became evident over time. Some, including the French historian Roger Chartier and several other advocates of a new cultural history, have argued that quantitative series are ineffective in understanding how human thought changes with the passage of time. Cultural historians disagree about two issues: folk culture and the extent to which it is possible to talk about collective symbolic structures. This chapter examines the debate on the history of culture and mentality.Less

This introduction provides an overview of the central issues contained in previously published reviews. It sets the stage for the civil sphere project in terms of the evolution of Alexander’s larger theoretical concerns. It presents a critical review of previously published critiques of Alexander’s understanding of civil society. It then presents an overview of his intellectual career from neo-functionalism to cultural sociology, with a focus on the significance of symbolic structures in helping to promote social solidarity. Finally, the introduction offers brief summaries and analysis of the six commentaries and Alexander’s rejoinder.Less

This chapter talks about inexplicit information, a form of information that exists in a system without benefit of any symbolic structure. It distinguishes and clarifies control-implicit information and domain-implicit information as the two types of inexplicit information. The control-implicit type describes information that is implicit in the ‘logic’ or ‘structure’ of the flow of control, while the domain-implicit type is information of a system that is lodged in the environment. The chapter concludes with a description of the explanatory role and program-executing features of the CHESS system.Less
