This chapter posits the importance of an agroecological perspective for developing suitable conditions in achieving sustainable coffee agroecosystems. Natural and traditional ecosystems are discussed to show the sustainability of the coffee agroecosystem. The traditional coffee systems in Mexico and Central America, used as possible starting points for conversion to a sustainable agroecosystem, are discussed. Natural ecosystems are compared with traditional, conventional, and sustainable coffee agroecosystems on an emergent ecological properties basis, including the diversity of species and productivity. The importance of integrating economic, social, and political processes with sustainable coffee agroecosystems to reduce synthetic inputs and maintain an affective evaluation of agroecosystems is also discussed.Less
