The teaching of French in British universities has recovered from a steady decline ten years ago, as evidenced by the continued existence of French departments, the recruitment of full cohorts by institutions, and upgrading of A-level entry requirements by polytechnics. This chapter examines the reason behind this recovery, namely jobs, or rather employability — the new corporate education buzzword coined during the years of trouble to improve job prospects for humanities graduates. Across many institutions it has sparked a number of ingenious initiatives to make French and other languages attractive once again to new cohorts of hard-headed school-leavers with strong career aspirations. The Career Management Skills (CMS) strategy at the University of Westminster is presented as a case study.Less
