Current literature reveals that understanding gender crossing, particularly that of transgender individuals, is a phenomenon in critical need of investigation within the field of psychology. The authors apply a framework of intersectionality to understand the development of multiple identities for transgender individuals. Language and cultural identity within transgender communities are discussed. The authors identify and discuss methods of understanding transgender individuals within the context of their sociocultural identities and communities. Implications for research and scholarship are presented.Less
