This chapter discusses sewerage systems and methods of sewage treatment. There are two types of sewerage systems: ‘combined’ and ‘separate’. In combined sewerage systems, rainwater from roads and roofs and sewage from homes and wastewater from factories are collected in the same pipe system and then transported to a sewage treatment works (STW). In separate sewerage systems, the foul drainage water from homes and factories is collected in one sewer and piped to the STW for treatment. The methods of sewage treatment discussed in this chapter include the percolating filter system and activated sludge. The chapter also describes the chemistry of sewage effluent and then presents a case study on sewage treatment in East Kilbride, Scotland.Less

This book examines a number of important contemporary environmental issues. The topics covered include sewage treatment, eutrophication, air pollution, acid rain, global warming and pollution from farming. A particularly valuable section of the book describes a range of tests that can be carried out on various environmental parameters. The procedures require relatively simple equipment and they have been pre-tested in a school laboratory.Less

Lakes constitute highly challenging contexts for the conservation of nature in the city. Over the centuries, the social function of lakes has changed from essential water reservoirs and locations of rich biodiversity to empty places valued for their ability to hold vast quantities of sewage, or as potential real estate gold mines. As we have seen, efforts at lake conservation need joint efforts by government agencies, civic bodies, and resident groups of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Only this can help to forge a new approach for the conservation of lakes in Bengaluru, one that is pluralistic, inclusive, and generated from the ground up. Such collaborative efforts should, however, not be restricted only to lakes, and are indeed required to protect all aspects of nature in the city.Less

All over the world, democratic reforms have brought power to the people, but under conditions where the people have little opportunity to think about the power that they exercise. This book combines a new theory of democracy with actual practice and shows how an idea that harks back to ancient Athens can be used to revive our modern democracies. This book outlines deliberative democracy projects conducted by the author with various collaborators in the US, China, Britain, Denmark, Australia, Italy, Bulgaria, Northern Ireland, and in the entire European Union. These projects have resulted in the massive expansion of wind power in Texas, the building of sewage treatment plants in China, and greater mutual understanding between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.Less
