The epilogue revisits the themes of aesthetic/affecting politics and semiotic resourcefulness to reveal how dance in Guinea has maintained transformative potency across dramatic political-economic change. By framing key ethnographic moments presented in the chapters through the concept of infrastructure, the epilogue returns to Conakry’s cityness, showing how imperfections and blockages in the circulation of ideas, people, and embodied signs generate novel possibilities in the urban present.Less

This book is the definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation. The book reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for “all available boats,” tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. Anchored in eyewitness accounts, the book weaves together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them. The book describes the inner workings of New York Harbor and reveals the collaborative power of its close-knit community. This chronicle of those crucial hours, when hundreds of thousands of lives were at risk, highlights how resourcefulness and basic human goodness triumphed over turmoil on one of America's darkest days.Less

This epilogue reflects on how the classic 9/11 hero narrative seemed rooted in some arbitrary separation between those who help and those who do not. It seemed to hinge on some diminishment of our collective human potential. Many of the people who showed up to work at Ground Zero — firefighters, ironworkers, engineers, journalists, chiropractors, medics, people from trades of all kinds — did so out of a sense of duty and professional honor. Yet, even those with no obviously applicable expertise possessed skills that could be useful, so they used them. These acts have always seemed less about heroism and more about pragmatism, resourcefulness, and simple human decency. Stepping up, with purpose, even in the absence of a plan, allows us to foster the connectedness that is the very manifestation of humanity.Less

This chapter discusses the scope and coherence of American ethics, obstacles in the path of excellence, and the reality of moral standards. It presents reasons why there is a need for American ethics. First, for an ethics to be relevant to people, it has to address their particular circumstances. Second, though the United States is a young country compared with China and Japan, or France and England, it is culturally the oldest sibling of the global family. As American culture spreads around the globe there are two virtues that can be considered as characteristically American—generosity and resourcefulness.Less

This chapter develops the French wartime concept of Le Système D as an imaginative framework for finding stability amid the chaos of war. Le Système D provided an overarching narrative framework within which the threat to poilu (French infantry soldier) integrity (both physical and psychic) depicted in scenes of combat could be offset in scenes of rest behind the lines. Here the poilu is shown putting himself back together again psychically through forms of creativity and play. Soldier-novelists Henri Barbusse and Roland Dorgelès and civilian humorists at the popular magazine La Baïonnette showcased behaviors long associated with the picaro but updated for a modern context. Depictions of soldier thieving and trickery, craftsmanship, bricolage, and evasive tactics reveal a new picaresque imagination at play. They meet the challenge posed by the war for a new kind of protagonist, one skilled in the arts of survival.Less

Prostitution and the reasons for turning to it are contrasted with other clandestine activities done for other reasons. The chapter is organized around several subjects: resistance in the nineteenth century, the Underground Railroad, and resourcefulness in the eighteenth century. Archaeological examples of nineteenth-century resistance include defiance in the workplace at factories and railroad sites and archaeological evidence of prison escape attempts and site conditions behind the walls. The difficulty of finding legitimate evidence of the Underground Railroad is discussed, archaeologically identified hiding places are described, and the potential of using archaeology to reveal the participation of otherwise unknown free black communities is considered. Evidence for eighteenth-century resourcefulness includes in-the-ground evidence of smuggling as well as the presence of illegitimately acquired artifacts and the underwater recovery of two pirate ships.Less
