This chapter examines qualitative content analysis, a recent methodological innovation. Qualitative content analysis is defined and distinguished here from basic and interpretive approaches to content analysis. Qualitative content analysis is also distinguished from other qualitative research methods, though features and techniques overlap with other qualitative methods. Key differences in the predominant use of newly collected data and use of non-quantitative analysis techniques are detailed. Differences in epistemology and the role of researcher self-awareness and reflexivity are also discussed. Methods of graphic data presentation are illustrated. Three short exemplar studies using qualitative content analysis are described and examined. Qualitative content analysis is explored in detail in terms of its characteristic components: (1) the research purposes of content analysis, (2) target audiences, (3) epistemological issues, (4) ethical issues, (5) research designs, (6) sampling issues and methods, (7) collecting data, (8) coding and categorization methods, (9) data analysis methods, and (10) the role of researcher reflection.Less

This book offers an in-depth step-by-step guide to the use of semi-structured interviews in qualitative research. By tracing the life of an actual research project—an exploration of a school district's effort over 40 years to address racial equality—as a consistent example threaded across the book, it shows how readers can approach the planning and execution of their own new research endeavor, and illuminates unexpected real-life challenges they may confront and how to address them. The book offers a close look at the inductive nature of qualitative research, the use of researcher reflexivity, and the systematic and iterative steps involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. It offers guidance on how to develop an interview protocol, including the arrangement of questions and ways to evoke analytically rich data.Less

Museum visits are highly personal. In this chapter, the authors share their personal journeys of museum worlds in order to inspire readers to embark on their own explorations. There are many channels through which African art reaches the rest of the world, including museum imports, private markets, catalogues, book publications, and tourist photographs. All of these outlets contribute to personal discoveries of African art. The book began with a focus on official museums, but, as the sample grew, the researchers moved beyond the walls of museums into personal collections and outdoor venues of artistic performances and festivals. The chapter discusses the authors’ interdisciplinary conversations along the way and the researchers’ reflexivity at the surprise of discovering oneself as a museum subject.Less
