This book offers an in-depth step-by-step guide to the use of semi-structured interviews in qualitative research. By tracing the life of an actual research project—an exploration of a school district's effort over 40 years to address racial equality—as a consistent example threaded across the book, it shows how readers can approach the planning and execution of their own new research endeavor, and illuminates unexpected real-life challenges they may confront and how to address them. The book offers a close look at the inductive nature of qualitative research, the use of researcher reflexivity, and the systematic and iterative steps involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. It offers guidance on how to develop an interview protocol, including the arrangement of questions and ways to evoke analytically rich data.Less

This chapter presents how Cornell University Medical College (CUMC) was reborn as the Weill Cornell Medical College. A generous donation from Sanford Weill, chair of the board of overseers, and his wife, Joan, led to the renaming of the medical school in 1998 and the completion of its first strategic plan. The road to the Weill gift began when CUMC integrated its strategic planning and fundraising efforts for the first time. In 1990, Cornell University launched a five-year Campaign for Cornell—the New Horizons for Medicine campaign. At the same time, a strategic plan for the medical college was being developed, the Strategic Plan for Research, which became the fundraising template for the medical college's section of the campaign. Philanthropy also became increasingly important to Cornell as it tried to build up its academic programs and faculty.Less

In this chapter, the author draws upon three programs to describe the critical relationship between modes of presentation and interpretation of cultural heritage and traditional knowledge and skills at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. It addresses the complex interplay of many factors and strategies for presenting the skills and experience of participants at the Festival. This includes, among other processes of research and planning, the selection of participants, overall site design, visual presentation and display, the physical set-up of tent interiors, the use of interpretive materials, such as signs, photo murals, banners, and props, and the role of presenters/moderators. The programs described include Masters of the Building Arts, Carriers of Culture: Living Native Basket Traditions, and One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage.Less

This chapter provides guidance on planning and conducting focus group discussions. It describes tasks in preparing for focus group research, such as training the field team, recruiting participants, developing questions for the discussion guide, and ethical considerations. It then deals with conducting focus group discussions, describing the role of the moderator in conducting the discussion, managing group dynamics, and promoting an interactive discussion. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of approaches to analyzing focus group data.Less

As conventional cadastral maps only show building perimeters, they contain no information about a city’s internal structure—that is, about the complex interplay of architecture and its social and economic engagement. Urban planning seems to have little consideration for what goes on inside the buildings lining a street. The method of Urban Parterre Modeling described in this chapter refers to the city’s ground floor as a holistic urban system, covering both built-up and non-built-up areas. Street, ground floor, and inner courtyard are treated as separate entities, which brings out the interrelations between them, as it becomes clear that actual and potential ground-floor uses directly impact the correlated public street space. The chapter describes the development of the model and its present and future applications.Less

Manthey sends his plan to establish an Institute of Technical Chemistry in Copenhagen to Ørsted in Paris. Although Ørsted is grateful for his patron's solicitude for his career, he confesses that he intends to dedicate his life to no less than scientific research. So instead, Ørsted sketches his own plan to found a Research Institute for Physics and Chemistry. By now it was obvious that Ørsted had not conformed to the purpose of the Cappel Foundation's travel grant. Ørsted did now own himself defeated by the fiasco of the Napoleon Prize, but a few days later he was dreadfully awakened from his slumber by news from his brother that Sophie Propsthein, who had been silent for months, had broken their engagement.Less
