This Chapter provides a brief historical account and introduction to community-based participatory research (CBPR), important principles and methodological considerations and issues, and an illustrative example of its application to Photovoice. Examples are provided from the “Good Neighborhoods”, a large community-based participatory research project underway in the City of Detroit. A central premise of this chapter is that the CBPR approach is congruent with the values and respective missions of the profession of social work (e.g., self-determination, democratic leadership, empowerment, etc.). The second theme of the chapter adds knowledge to the literature on university–community partnerships and the roles foundations can play in creating dynamic and systemic community change when a collaboration consisting of the three is formed. The third foci is Photovoice, an intervention that has been used worldwide to promote social change and to empower individuals who have historically not been given a voice in their community.Less

Global history needs to take advantage of new research methodologies of teamwork and collaboration. Historians and economic historians can work together to provide historical data sets covering the world. Starts by setting the research presented in the book in historical context, and discusses its rationale and purpose. Describes the research methodology adopted and the objectives of the study, which are two: to document and analyse the recent changes in within‐country income inequality against the background of changes occurring in this area in the two preceding decades; and to identify the causes of the changes in income inequality recorded during the period under observation. Next, the main findings of the study are summarized, presented as six main conclusions: a fall in inequality during the golden age (the first 30 years after the Second World War) is followed by a rise over the last two decades (the 1980s and 1990s); sources of inequality change; impact of the observed inequality changes on poverty and growth; the contribution of structural factors to the recent surge in inequality; recent factors influencing the distribution of income–skilled‐biased technical change; and recent factors influencing the distribution of income—policies towards stabilization, liberalization, and globalization. The last section of the chapter discusses questions either unanswered or only partially answered in the book.Less

This chapter introduces the research methodology underpinning this book. It first defines the terms of ‘research’ and ‘methodology’ and discusses the implicit — and often unspoken — ideas about what research is and how it should operate. Academically situated researchers undergo long training and socialisation processes that involve learning the forms, practices, traditions, theories, and languages of their disciplines. As they move through those processes, they gain an expertise presumed to uniquely qualify them as researchers in that discipline. When these experts then produce knowledge, that knowledge is often endowed with a special authority; indeed, it is usually regarded as wholly different from the knowledge that those without academic credentials produce.Less

In this chapter, we present a methodological framework for scholar-activists who are interested in researching phenomena in which they are active participants as well. Using the example of an interfaith research team studying the impact of interfaith efforts, we consider what insights can be gained from researchers becoming participants in the research process. The members of the interfaith research team study the effect interfaith organizations have on individual, organizational, and community level outcomes. At the same time, research team members are committed as individuals to promoting social justice and understanding others of different faiths. By studying their own interfaith efforts, the research team is able to find deeper understanding of both the interfaith process and their own subjectivities as researchers.Less

This chapter provides a reflexive account of the research process and discusses the research methodology. It reflects on the stance of the authors and their approach to the research topic. The chapter also describes the process of gaining access to families and negotiating informed consent to participate in the study, as well as researcher/researched relations. It then highlights some of the ethical issues raised by cross-cultural research and interviewing respondents about sensitive topics, including the importance of confidentiality and anonymity, and the need to manage respondents' expectations. The chapter describes the main characteristics of interviewees and the locations for the research, as well as the approach to data analysis and dissemination.Less

This chapter summarizes several methodological issues, including certain research design and analysis paradigms, related to the Seattle Longitudinal Study. The discussion begins with a brief exposition of the relationship between cross-sectional and longitudinal data within the context of the general developmental model, followed by a presentation of the rationale for a variety of simple and sequential schemes for data acquisition and analysis. The problems of internal validity of developmental studies and designs for the measurement and control that plague developmental studies are explored. The chapter ends by exploring the relationship between observed measures and latent (unobserved) variables, and how confirmatory (restricted) factor analysis can be applied to assess construct equivalence across cohorts, age, and time in the study of developmental problems.Less

This chapter provides an overview of the book’s main objectives and arguments. It gives definitions of key terms such as gospel music, worship, and Pentecostalism, while describing the cultural, spiritual, and migratory flows that are operative within and beyond Jamaican Pentecostal congregations. Described as significant boundary-crossing endeavors, these flows are related to controversies surrounding Jamaican religious and national identity. The chapter explains that the transmission of gospel music from the United States shapes the ways in which Pentecostal Christians in Jamaica characterize the genre. The history of Pentecostalism in Jamaica is also discussed in connection with influential social and religious developments in the United States and England. This chapter also outlines the research methodology and theoretical framework that inform the author’s treatment of the topic and provides brief descriptions of the subsequent chapters.Less

Presenting the landmark pioneers' life stories project, this book documents how modern social research in the United Kingdom was shaped. It sheds new light on the lives, methods and motivations of men and women who helped develop a new world of research methodology, pioneered feminist research, and first confronted the issues of race and ethnicity. Many of the pioneers' lives were shaped by the declining decades of the British Empire, and the book begins by highlighting the experiences and practices of the generations who were active from the 1950s to the 1980s, the crucial founding generations for today's social research scene. These were the decades which saw the final phase of colonial anthropology, the explosive growth of sociology in universities, and then the founding of theme-based women's, ethnic and cultural studies and the development of ethical practices and systematic methodologies. The book combines the fascinating history of the generations who built outstanding and influential social research with providing a major resource for current research and especially for methods for future teaching.Less

Research in education and the training of educational researchers are often said to require attention to epistemological diversity; that is, researchers ought to be familiar with different ways of knowing and diverse epistemological perspectives. But the notion is unclear. What is “epistemological diversity”? What exactly is epistemological about it? And why is it important for educational researchers to be knowledgeable about it? In addressing these questions, I will argue that the call for epistemological diversity is not, where justified, as radical or significant as it is often taken to be; and that, where it is radical or significant, it is not justified.Less

What is the role of science in social work? Ian Shaw considers social work inventions, evidence-based practice, the history of scientific claims in social work practice, technology, and social work research methodology to demonstrate the significant role that scientific language and practice play in the complex world of social work. By treating science as a social action marked by the interplay of choice, activity, and constraints, Shaw links scientific and social work knowledge through the core themes of the nature of evidence, critical learning and understanding, justice, and the skilled evaluation of the subject. He shows specifically how to connect science, research, and the practical and speaks to the novel topics this integration introduces into the discipline, including experience, expertise, faith, tacit knowledge, judgment, interests, scientific controversies, and understanding.Less

The relevance of intellectual property (IP) law has increased dramatically over the last several years. Globalization, digitization, and the rise of post-industrial information-based industries have all contributed to a new prominence of IP law as one of the most important factors in driving innovation and economic development. At the same time, the significant expansion of IP rules has impacted many areas of public policy such as public health, the environment, biodiversity, agriculture, information, in an unprecedented manner. The growing importance of IP law has led to an exponential growth of academic research in this area. This Book offers a comprehensive overview of the methods and approaches that can be used to address and develop scholarly research questions related to IP law. In particular, this Book aims to provide a useful resource that can be used by IP scholars who are interested in expanding their expertise in a specific research method or seek to acquire an understanding of alternative lenses that could be applied to their research. Even though this Book does not claim to include all existing research methodologies, it represents one of the largest and most diverse compilations, which has been carried out to date. In addition, the authors of this Book comprise an equally diverse group of scholars from different jurisdictions, backgrounds, and legal traditions. This diversity, both regarding the topics and the authors, is a fundamental feature of the Book, which seeks to assist IP scholars worldwide in their research journeys.Less

This chapter examines the way researchers represent what it means to be d/Deaf in their research. More specifically, it explores the interrelationships between ontological approaches, views of what is valid knowledge, and what comes to be known about d/Deaf people: in other words, epistemology. It argues that specifying an epistemological perspective is the bedrock of good social research, that opening up the research process by discussing its underpinnings enables critical engagement that can challenge the deliberate or unknowing silencing of alternative perspectives. It also considers whether the “models of deafness” underpinning a research study influences a researcher's epistemological approach; whether an epistemological position is predictive of a research methodology; and whether a research method is tied to an epistemological position.Less

This chapter investigates the work of the researcher as “sex artist” or vice versa, the “sex artist” as researcher, wondering if artistic types of research methodology ought to be taken seriously in the fields of media and sexuality studies. More specifically, the chapter hopes to work out this question in dialogue with a gay media artist from Hong Kong, Isaac Leung. Leung became internationally known as a “sex artist” when he volunteered to use digital media to investigate aspects of his sexual desire and identity. As a sex artist, he found that the methodologies of mainstream contemporary art and media scholarship could not capture his more fragile and quickly evolving sexual needs. As a response to the perceived outdated nature of institutionalized research methodologies, many sex artists have opted to take on “DIY” (do-it-yourself) technologies, aesthetics, and performative approaches to make their assertions.Less

The first of two chapters in a music-analytic case study on collective improvisation, this chapter introduces reyong norot, a collectively improvised practice for the Balinese gamelan gong kebyar’s four-person melodic gong chime reyong. The chapter’s goals are two-fold. On the smaller scale, it investigates the consciously-known but unspoken model guiding reyong norot performance: a model derived from the fixed norot playing of the ensemble’s gangsa metallophones then further informed by a knowledge base unique to reyong. Analyses reveal how the gangsa’s complementary polos and sangsih melodic strands, which are played using either specific interlocking figuration (kotekan) or parallel harmonizing notes (kempyung), are differently conceived on the reyong because of its construction and performance practice. More broadly, the chapter outlines a research methodology for uncovering unspoken models for improvisation and analyzing their manifestations in improvised practice. Proposing five basic steps – listening, learning to play, immersion, transcription, and one-on-one interactions – it delineates processes of discovery, ethnographic field methods, and musical analysis techniques from the author’s research on reyong norot as suggested research methods for analytical ethnomusicologists. Discussions throughout the chapter assume an outward bearing, applying concepts to diverse practices worldwide and suggesting rich potential for comparative and cross-cultural research.Less

This book describes twelve unconventional methodologies in organization and management research. These include unconventional research settings and data sources, unconventional research designs and data collection methods, unconventional analytic approaches, and designs and methods that exploit new technology developments. Our aim is to encourage dialogue and experimentation with regard to the development of innovative, unconventional approaches to organization and management research. Several commentators have criticized the way in which research methods have become more formulaic, and have argued for greater diversity in research approaches. The methodological perspective that we adopt also shapes our interpretation of the information that we gather. Different methods generate different kinds of information, leading to different ways of understanding the phenomena that we are investigating. Our methods influence our styles of theorizing, ways of thinking and reasoning, and forms of writing and reporting research. This book will be of value to academic researchers in organization and management studies, Doctoral candidates, and Masters students on MBA and similar programmes.Less

This chapter presents ethnography as a helpful way to acquire understanding of the culture and cultural knowledge of people outside one’s own cultural context, either a “foreign” culture or a subgroup within one’s own culture. Ethnography is understood as a theoretically driven, systematic approach to the study of a social group’s everyday life that allows the researcher to understand and see the sociocultural world of a social group from the members’ own perspectives. The chapter concludes with describing the characteristics of research when ethnography is used as a meta-framework for culturally competent research. The meta-framework allows the researcher to explore, define, and refine questions and adjust the study design and research techniques to be inclusive of a diverse range of research methodologies including both quantitative and qualitative research methods.Less
