After looking at the general state of the art in conceiving the Mediterranean region in social research, the contribution tries to discuss approaches of historical research to look at the Mediterranean as belonging together and points to the necessity to include the southern and southeastern countries of Arabian and Turkish background into the analysis. By discussing the ambivalences of concepts of a Mediterranean culture, the applicability of modernization theory to the region, particularly to the southern countries is reflected and evaluated in detail by looking how ageing in this region has been already analyzed by using ten areas for consideration: rationalization and performance orientations, professionalization, control and security assurance, migration, religious affiliations, family dynamics, health and care, changing role of women, media and telecommunications impact, democratisation.Less
