Book V, also known as the Liber Quaestionum (The Book of Questions), comprises sixteen “interrogations,” each divided into questions and answers, and a number of separate “revelations” that are interspersed among them. This apparently scholastic debate raises a number of theological issues, such as the created order of the world, natural theology, Christology and aspects of the Incarnation, and the justice of God's providence and divine grace. The introduction to Book V examines some of the themes of individual skepticism, the quest for theological understanding, and intellectual arrogance. It also discusses the identity of the monk-on-the-ladder and considers the role of the interspersed revelations in the book.Less

This is the second volume of the translation of the Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden. It contains Book IV and Book V, the so-called Liber Quaestionum (The Book of Questions). Book IV includes some of the saint's most influential visions, especially those on the subject of the papacy, purgatory, and the Hundred Years' War. Book V takes the form of a learned dialogue between Christ and a monk standing on a ladder fixed between heaven and earth. The argument centers on the way in which God's providence is constantly misunderstood and rejected by self-centered humans; and it ranges over a number of theological issues, such as the created order of the world, justice, Christology, and the Incarnation.Less

This chapter introduces the whole book: it outlines the thinking behind and rationale for the book, the key questions addressed and how the book is organised. It argues that errors and mistakes in child protection are an important issue in different countries across Europe, Scandinavia and North America. They have attracted public interest, media debates and influenced changes in policy and practice. Such developments raise a number of important questions including: What are the impacts of errors and mistakes in child protection? What discourses inform the way errors and mistakes are understood and the way they are responded to? Are certain strategies seen as helpful in reducing errors and mistakes? The book analyses the developments in policy and practice in response to errors and mistakes in child protection in different countries. Chapters cover the historical and political background of discourses on errors and mistakes in different countries and show how errors and mistakes are constructed differently in different political and social contexts with both similar and different impacts. The book demonstrates that what are understood as errors and mistakes have varied both over time and across different jurisdictions. This chapter provides both the framework for the organization of the book and briefly introduces the contents of the different chapters.Less
