In this chapter, Kim Iryŏp reflects on the purification movement in Korean Buddhism that took place during the 1950s. Iryŏp rationalizes the necessity of the purification movement by pointing to the impure elements that existed in Korean Buddhism at the time. She argues that secular scholars and the masters are not up to the task of leading the purification movement, and that the movement is now slowly shaping its path after experiencing various difficulties. When we recover the purified human mind, the life of a human being finally begins. The purification movement, according to Iryŏp, became necessary because of impure reality.Less
