This chapter outlines key principles of collaboration that can guide efforts to involve consumers, family members, providers, administrators, and community members more fully in child mental health services research efforts. It then highlights opportunities for collaboration across the research process, from the development of guiding research questions, to study methods and procedures, to interpretation of study results and dissemination activities. Examples of the challenges that arise in collaborative efforts with youth and their families, providers, systems, and communities are discussed. Finally, a discussion of next steps for child mental health services research is offered.Less

This chapter begins with a brief description of the purpose of this book, which is to make explicit the implicit frameworks of researchers, community practitioners, parents or caregivers, and family advisors about models for creating sustained partnerships to improve knowledge about mental health services for children, adolescents, and their families. It then discusses the principles of collaboration, the science-to-practice gap, family/professional collaboration in child mental health services, and community-based services. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.Less

The chapter focuses on the characteristics and benefits of inter-professional teamwork for palliative care. Well-functioning inter-professional collaboration in palliative care for older people can lead to better patient-centred care and may protect health care workers from moral distress and burnout. Input factors that determine the success of teamwork include a management and administrative organization that promotes interdisciplinary consultation and specific skills in staff members to ensure shared care goal setting. Health care workers with different professional knowledge and backgrounds not only have to attune their interventions according to the competences and needs of the other team members but also have to place the needs of the patient first. This chapter provides an example of how the inter-professional shared care matrix helps in the collaborative decision making, planning, and follow-up in palliative care for older people.Less

This chapter explores the background to partnerships in housing and mental health. It examines themes that emerged from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation-funded workshops on partnership working. It discusses the implications of the lack of direct input from voluntary and community organisations and service users. It suggests that service providers need to use the opportunities available in current plans for mental health services to go beyond professional collaboration and develop partnerships with users of mental health services and voluntary organisations, based on user definitions of need and supporting user-led alternatives.Less

This chapter discusses similarities and differences among the co-enrollment programs described in this volume. In doing so, it emphasizes the diversity among deaf learners and the concomitant difficulty of a “one size fits all” approach to co-enrollment programs as well as to deaf education at large. The programs described in this book thus understandably are also diverse in their approach to programming and to communication, in particular. For example, many encourage flexible use of spoken and sign modalities to encourage communication between DHH students, their hearing peers, and their classroom teachers. Others emphasize spoken language or sign language. Several programs include multi-grade classrooms, allowing DHH students to benefit socially and academically from active engagement in the classroom, and some report positive social and academic outcomes. Most programs follow a general education curriculum; all emphasize collaboration among staff as the key to success.Less

The challenges of physicians working in palliative care are discussed in this chapter. Palliative care practitioners have been shown to experience less burnout than physicians and oncologists. The word palliative means “to abate” or “reduce the violence of.” The term palliative care is care that eases the symptoms. The author notes that the most challenging aspect of palliative care is dealing with the flood of emotions that attend a person’s awareness of their mortality or their actual death. Managing the flood of emotions, as noted by Chynoweth and others in this book, is something that doctors are rarely trained to handle[SC2].Less

This chapter focuses on the intersection of economics, social psychology, and the experimental method. No other truly social science uses experimental methods as much as these two fields, and experiments provide a common arena for effective collaboration. However, increasingly strident philosophical stances on what is and is not appropriate methodologically have limited the collaborative potential of these two related fields. The chapter begins by presenting some definitions and some historical perspectives on economics and social psychology. It then turns to concepts that are not just common but central to both modes of inquiry. It provides a methodological framework that might satisfy the desires and goals of both fields while simultaneously expanding opportunities for each field to contribute to the other and expand what is known about the phenomena they study.Less
