This chapter examines Caribbean popular dances that undergo transformations over time and across borders, with particular emphasis on Cuban community rumba and how it evolved into commercial rhumba. It first considers intra-Caribbean dances and their dance music mixtures before turning to Cuban rumba to illustrate how popular dance changes shape and identities and travels across old and new borders, from local to transnational. It also discusses mixing and (con)fusion that characterize Cuban popular dances by citing the case of mambo, a descendant of son. Finally, it describes quindembo, a mixture of dance movement vocabulary that keeps refreshing itself with new trends, and the concept of liberation within Caribbean popular dance.Less

This chapter examines Caribbean dance in the context of tourism and globalization. In particular, it looks at the interaction between tourism enterprises and dance genres, dance artists, and island governments as well as its implications for cultural and economic globalization. After providing an overview of human and natural resources available on the Caribbean islands and how they have been developed toward tourism, the chapter discusses the integration of Caribbean dance and music making into regional development as aids to differing types of tourist planning. It then considers the globalization of Caribbean dances such as merengue, mambo, salsa, and reggae and how Caribbean sacred dance, concert dance, and popular dance fare within cultural globalization or homogenizing trends, local market structures and tourism. It also analyzes the impact of globalization on Caribbean dancers and the local and global tensions brought on by globalization as they relate to Caribbean dance and tourism. The chapter concludes by offering suggestions for confronting pressures from cultural and economic globalization.Less

The book investigates social dances brought to the islands by Europeans and Africans, including quadrilles and drum/dances as well as popular dances that followed, such as Carnival parading, Pan-Caribbean danzas, rumba, merengue, mambo, reggae, and zouk. The book reviews sacred dance and closely documents combat dances, such as Martinican ladja, Trinidadian kalinda, and Cuban juego de maní. In drawing on scores of performers and consultants from the region as well as on the author's own professional dance experience and acumen, the book adeptly places Caribbean dance in the context of cultural and economic globalization, connecting local practices to transnational and global processes and emphasizing the important role of dance in critical regional tourism. Throughout, the book reveals impromptu and long-lasting Diaspora communities of participating dancers and musicians.Less

She is Cuba: A Genealogy of the Mulata Body traces the history of the Cuban mulata and her association with hips, sensuality and popular dance. It examines how the mulata choreographs her racialised identity through her hips and enacts an embodied theory called hip(g)nosis. By focusing on her living and dancing body in order to flesh out the process of identity formation, this book makes a claim for how subaltern bodies negotiate a cultural identity that continues to mark their bodies on a daily basis. Combining literary and personal narratives with historical and theoretical accounts of Cuban popular dance history, religiosity and culture, this work investigates the power of embodied exchanges: bodies watching, looking, touching and dancing with one another. It sets up a genealogy of how the representations and venerations of the dancing mulata continue to circulate and participate in the volatile political and social economy of contemporary Cuba.Less
