In the aftermath of the agitation over the constitution, the men of the Bloque Agrario became the undisputed leaders of Catholic Salamanca. They had presided over an unprecedented period of political turbulence and had orchestrated the first large-scale political mobilization ever experienced in the province. Salamanca was the only Northern Province affected by agrarian reform. The province's inclusion in the Agrarian Reform Law was confirmed in December 1931, despite the bitter opposition of the Bloque Agrario. Candido Casanueva developed a different line of argument in his campaigning against the proposed reform. While admitting that it was not permissible for proprietors to be guilty of abuses. The Bloque Agrario's leadership of the Salamancan countryside was now virtually undisputed. The campaign against the constitution, together with the agitation over agrarian reform and the continuing concern with the religious issue had brought the parliamentary right back into political prominence.Less

Insurance is one of Hong Kong's oldest industries. In the nineteenth century, the lucrative trade between China and Europe carried many risks—piracy, warfare, fire, loss of goods, and other mishaps. Dozens of different insurance firms—some home-grown, others imported—established themselves in the colony to protect ships and their cargoes. With the diversification of Hong Kong's economy into manufacturing and services, Hong Kong became a global center of insurance, and the industry continues to transform itself today through changing practices and new lines of business. This is the first history of Hong Kong's insurance industry, and it argues its central importance in the economy. Typhoons, shipwrecks, fires, wars, political turbulence, and unexpected events of all kinds provide a dramatic background to this survey, which is illustrated with photographs and documents.Less
