Capacities for meeting peak demand for power are the need of the hour. This chapter outlines perspectives from the supply side as well as the demand side for peaking power and also explains the pre-requisites for making investments in peaking power plants feasible. The Electricity Act, 2003 and the Tariff Policy have provisions for differential tariff based on total consumption for a specific period and introduction of differential rates for fixed charges for peak and off-peak generation for better management of load. The chapter presents the current scenario in this respect and also the regulatory response so far. The chapter analyses the various issues which are seen as a constraint to the development of peaking power capacity in the country. Required policy and regulatory interventions have been suggested to encourage setting up of peaking power plants which are urgently required for the power sector in India.Less

Neutron powder diffractometers nowadays incorporate multiple detectors. This chapter begins with the data reduction to present a single record of intensity against angle (for CW diffractometers) or time-of-flight. The importance of visual inspection to assess peak resolution, peak shapes, noise, and background is stressed. Subsequent analyses such as phase identification via a search/match procedure, measurement of peak positions in order to determine d-spacings, indexing of the peaks (assignment of reflection indices), and determination of lattice parameters by least-squares fitting to the positions of the indexed peaks are presented. Lastly, given analytical expressions for peak shapes and the variation of peak widths with angle (or time-of-flight), whole pattern fitting, a method that can be employed to great advantage is outlined.Less

This chapter summarizes the book's main findings and their implications for the future, reflecting in particular on the limits of growth, peak oil, technology, and prospects for a return to the organic economy. The central part of the book's argument is that pre-industrial Europe faced energy constraints to economic growth, and was set free from these constraints by the adoption of fossil fuels, including coal. It suggests that the transition to fossil fuels was both a necessary condition and an enabling factor leading to modern growth. This concluding chapter presents two tenets that can inform contemporary debates about energy transitions and the future of economic growth. First, societies move on trajectories, but what has happened in the past bears a strong influence on paths taken in the future. Second, we can establish relationships between energy consumption and economic growth, even as the character of these relationships is not stable over time.Less

When David Lynch's film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, a prequel to the television series Twin Peaks, premiered at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, it was met with met with outright hostility. Subsequent reviews from critics were almost unanimously negative, and many fans of the show felt betrayed, as their beloved town was suddenly revealed as a personal hell. Yet in the years since the film's release, there has begun to be a gradual wave of reappraisal and appreciation, one that accelerated with the broadcast of Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017. What has been central to this reevaluation is the realization that what Lynch had created was not a parody of soap opera and detective television but a horror movie. This book argues that the horror genre aids Lynch's purpose in presenting the protagonist Laura Palmer's subjective experience leading to her death as the incorporation of horror tropes actually leads to a more accurate representation of a victim's suffering and confusion. The book goes on to explore how the film was an attempt by Lynch to take back ownership of the material and to examine the initial reaction and subsequent reevaluation of the film, as well as the paratexts that link to it and the influence that Fire Walk with Me now has on contemporary film and across popular culture.Less

This chapter on Spain follows the general argument of the book in rejecting the explanatory capacity of single-variable analyses. The history of social pacts in Spain is one of early success in the 1980s, when broad or encompassing tripartite social pacts were abandoned, failures in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and a gradual institutional consolidation of peak concertation and bipartite pacting after 1997. This irregular pattern poses numerous challenges to scholars interested in social pact emergence and institutionalization. In explaining the Spanish experience, political and organizational factors—including government weakness and relations between and within the unions—are critical for explaining the timing and character of Spain's social pact responses to the problem loads of unemployment and inflation, while utilitarian and power-distributive arguments are best suited for understanding the fluctuation of pacting over time and the more recent period of partial institutionalization.Less

This chapter describes general approaches to the ab initio solution of crystal structures from X-ray or neutron powder diffraction data. The steps in the process, unit cell determination and indexing, intensity extraction, space group determination, structure solution, and structure refinement are described. Indexing methods such as zone indexing, exhaustive methods or recently developed whole pattern methods, and the use of a figure of merit (M20) are presented. Intensity extraction is shown to be reasonably straightforward but for the problem of peak overlap that occurs in powder patterns. The phase problem makes structure solution more difficult: Fourier and Patterson methods, direct methods, or global optimization methods (simulated annealing, genetic algorithms) are brought to bear. The chapter concludes with a section on advanced refinement techniques, including the interpretation of displacement and site occupancy parameters, and the use of constraints. The discussion is illustrated by frequent reference to structure solution for the Ruddlesden-Popper compound Ca3Ti2O7.Less

The intensities of the peaks in a powder diffraction pattern are shown to scale with the mass of contributing material. Thus, for a sample comprising several phases, the mass fractions of the different phases can be obtained, at least in principle, from the ratios of intensities of peaks from different phases. Individual peak methods, such as the polymorph method, are described. There is a particularly simple connection between the mass of a phase and the corresponding scale factor as obtained in a multiphase Rietveld method analysis, and this is finding increasing application in quantitative phase analysis. The relative merits of X-rays and neutrons for phase analysis, analysis with or without standards, and the estimation of errors, are discussed. Applications to magnesia-partially stabilised zirconia (Mg-PSZ) and studies of the synthesis in situ of Ti3SiC2 are described in detail.Less

This chapter describes how diffraction peaks can be broadened, and sometimes their intensities altered, by microstructural effects. Much of the theory was developed for X-rays, but is also applicable in the neutron case. Peaks are broadened due to small crystallite size, or the presence of microstrains, or both. The analysis may involve deconvolution, individual peak fitting, whole pattern fitting, and the Scherrer equation. Methods for handling anisotropic broadening are presented. The Williamson-Hall plot is shown to be useful when size and strain broadening both are present. The effects on peak shapes of chemical and physical gradients are considered in detail: strain gradients for example lead to domain wall scattering. The theory of broadening due to dislocations is presented, and illustrated by application to LaNi5. The effects of planar defects, such as stacking faults and twin boundaries, are also considered. Finally, the effect on intensities of texture (preferred orientation) is discussed.Less

This book is an innovative reading of Walter Scott's Waverley Novels in the context of 18th- and 19th-century Gothic. Most critics have treated these two forms of historical narrative as though they were completely unrelated, but this detailed study places Scott's work in the context of Gothic fictions from Walpole to Maturin. In so doing, the author highlights their shared techniques of narrative deferral, fantasies of origin and originality, and strategies of authenticity and authority. The book takes in the whole range of Waverley Novels, and includes analyses of such neglected works as The Fortunes of Nigel, Peveril of the Peak, and Woodstock, as well as the more frequently studied Rob Roy, The Heart of Midlothian, and Redgauntlet. Offering fresh insight into the variety and complexity of Scott's novels, and into the traditions of criticism that have so often obscured them, this book contributes to the study of Romanticism, the novel, and to current theoretical debates concerning historical fiction and historiographic authority.Less

It explains Fire Walk With Me as a film that is part of a larger universe that also encompasses a recent television revival in 2017, novels, deleted scenes, DVD extras, and a huge swathe of fan-generated content apart from the original series that was aired from 1990 to 1991. It also explains Fire Walk With Me as a stand-alone film about an abused young woman and the trauma she endures. The chapter mentions how Fire Walk With Me was labelled as one of the worst films ever made in 1992 but was also proclaimed a masterpiece in 2013. It explores the Fire Walk With Me's many facets and the myriad ways that it can be felt and received.Less

Discrete obstacles, particularly in the form of precipitates of second phases with coherent or incoherent interfaces, dispersed crystalline or glassy nano-scale particles, and aggregates of point defects of various types and even nano-scale cavities can all interact with dislocations to act as slip obstacles that can significantly increase the plastic shear resistance of a metal or alloy. Since the strength of many precipitates can increase with size by aging the alloy at some elevated temperature, precipitate strengthening is a very flexible and powerful industrial process. The chapter explains the precipitation process to develop insight into the factors controlling discrete precipitate formation and decomposition of alloys in unstable regions of equilibrium into different domains by spinodal decomposition. This provides guidance into the factors that control the strengthening mechanisms associated with precipitate coarsening. The chapter also considers the development of a number of prominent mechanisms by which precipitates of various different types and other discrete nano-scale heterogeneities affect the plastic resistance of alloys. The discussion begins with a brief catalogue of the principal forms of interaction between discrete particles and dislocations, as well as of other heterogeneities acting as particles, including an assessment of the possible extent of thermal activation in overcoming such obstacles. There follows a presentation of the various ways in which glide dislocations sample discrete obstacles ranging from the more embryonic forms of clusters to eventually fully mature dispersoids. Relevant theoretical details of specific individual interaction mechanisms of precipitates with dislocations are presented to develop models for plastic resistance, that are compared with corresponding experimental results.Less

This chapter examines Scott's techniques of secrecy and suggestion in The Pirate, Rob Roy, and Peveril of the Peak, arguing that Scott draws on his readers' familiarity with a literature of terror while allowing them, if they choose, to categorize it as literary and therefore secondary to the main purposes (moral and political) of his art. It also argues for a strategic and self-aware use of Gothic conventions, which are not to be equated either technically or psychologically with anything ‘repressed’ by the ‘dominant’ aesthetic of these novels.Less

According to some industrial relations accounts like corporatist theory, the ability of unions and employer associations to employ incomes policy depends on their degree of centralization. Despite this, the application of centralization and the collection of comparable data have been given little attention. When looking into associational centralization, the relationship between associations and their members has to be considered. With the occurrence of problems such as the complex multi-level hierarchy and the discrepancy between the formal distribution of powers and the actual relations, centralization, in this chapter, is measured by looking at the following indicators: the formal powers/obligations of the largest structural peak with regard to its affiliates, the formal powers/obligations of the said affiliates to lower associational levels, the formal associational control over the lowest level, and the actual role of the largest peak in bargaining and negotiation.Less

This chapter celebrate the character in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me named Laura Palmer, who evolved from an image personifying the 'beautiful dead girl' to a character who is complex and flawed, yet powerful and strong. It explains how Fire Walk With Me is considered as a horror film due to Laura's story as it is a horror that is all too real for way too many people. It also mentions Twin Peaks as a place of mystery that is both wonderful and strange and hints that there is something more beyond the surface. The chapter focuses on Laura as the key to the whole Twin Peaks universe. It discusses how the audience got to know more about Laura in Fire Walk With Me.Less

The first detailed study of the ‘peak oil movement,’ this book combines sociology, literary criticism, history and environmental studies to explore an early twenty-first century environmental social movement and its implications for American politics, contemporary social movements, and environmental issues, including climate change. It describes the ideology of ‘peakism’ and the actions taken by over 100,000 peak oil believers to prepare for the post-carbon future, and places this group in the historical context of beliefs about scarcity and abundance in recent American history. A group of leftists who largely responded as survivalists to a perceived environmental crisis, Peak Politics views the peak oil movement as an indicator of the rise of libertarian ideals in American political culture over the last four decades, and explores the role of digital technologies in this ‘libertarian shift.’ It argues that while ‘peakists’ overestimated the rapidity and consequences of energy depletion, they present an important case study of proportionate responses to the environmental crises of our current age, the Anthropocene, such as climate change and resource depletion. Their experiences provide an instructive study of the social organization of denial of environmental problems; the role of oil in modern life; the political impact of digital technologies; the political quiescence of some leftist environmentalists; the racial and gender dynamics of post-apocalyptic fantasies; and the convergence of global environmental problems and libertarian political solutions.Less
