This chapter focuses on the British Trust for Ornithology's (BTO) model for engaging volunteers in scientific research. The BTO is the leading center of ornithological research in Britain and undertakes impartial investigations about birds, other species, and habitats to advance understanding of nature. The BTO's work provides an interesting contrast to most North American citizen science projects with its emphasis on a question-driven approach. This chapter reviews the history of ornithological research as it relates to citizen science in the UK, paying attention to the BTO's historical aims in relation to current and historic research agendas and impacts. It also explains why the BTO has been successful as a research organization.Less
