This book explores the development of Robert Lepage’s distinctive approach to stage direction in the early (1984–94) and middle (1995–2008) stages of his career, arguing that globalisation had a defining effect in shaping his aesthetic and professional trajectory. It combines examination of Lepage’s theatremaking techniques with discussion of his work’s effects on audiences, calling on Lepage’s own statements as well as existing scholarship and critical response. In addition to globalisation theory, the book draws on cinema studies, queer theory, and theories of affect and reception. As such, it offers an unprecedented conceptual framework, drawing together what has previously been a scattered field of research. Each of six chapters treats a particular aspect of globalisation, using this as a means to explore one or more of Lepage’s productions. These aspects include the relationship of the local (in Lepage’s case, his background in Québec) to the global; the place of individual experience within global late modernity; the effects of screen media on human perception; the particular affect of ‘feeling global’; the place of branding in contemporary creative systems; and the relationship of creative industries to neoliberal economies. Making theatre global: Robert Lepage’s original stage productions will be of interest to scholars of contemporary theatre, advanced-level undergraduates with an interest in the application of theoretical approaches to theatrical creation and reception, and arts lovers keen for new perspectives on one of the most talked-about theatre artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.Less

This chapter examines the intersections of transnational Islam with the neoliberal capitalist economy through an ethnographic analysis of the transformations in the South Asian ethnic economy, from its inception and development as a center of South Asian commerce in the 1980s to its twenty-first-century avatar as production and consumption nodes in the “transnational Muslim heritage economy.” The narratives and the everyday lives of Pakistani ethnic entrepreneurs who own and manage the businesses, and the working class and the working poor who provide much of the labor for these businesses, provide an important case study of the classed heterogeneity of the Pakistani Muslim community in Houston. Moreover, these narratives demonstrate the experience of marginality within ethnic spaces of commerce as well as within the larger American society.Less

This chapter is an attempt to document and analyse the impact of neoliberal economy on the livelihood of the most marginal Dalit artisanal communities with further examination of its impact on their resistance, needed to accelerate their struggle for a better future. The new economy is adversely impacting their traditional occupations. At present, state led governance largely influenced by a liberal economy is proposing not only moderate earnings but small savings too, as a survival strategy. It claims it is making innovative efforts to develop entrepreneurship among marginals and Dalits. These communities have the capacity neither to compete in nor to negotiate new situations. They are reverting to unskilled labour. Such groups might be called ‘communities in confusion’. A new liberal economy is promoting consumerism-led dreams and desires. This market is accelerating their aspirations on the one hand, and diminishing the element of dissent and resistance on the other.Less

This book tries to provide a novel and comparative perspective on the governmental drive to create healthier, more productive, engaged citizens. In order to achieve this, the book is structured around three key arguments that are woven throughout the chapters. The first asserts that personal responsibility and informed choice may be discursive bedrocks of neoliberal health policy, but the relative influence of people's circumstances or ‘luck’ has received far too little attention. The second argument builds on the first and posits that the call for sensible behaviour emerges from the need to manage tensions internal to many neoliberal economies. Third, the book argues that, with personal lifestyle choices now accepted as having a complex array of negative externalities, encouraging sensible lifestyle choices has become a tool in a range of public policies that extend far beyond public health.Less

Chapter three investigates everyday political subjectivity in Conakry ballets as a cultivated interaction between authority and vitality, discipline and invention. Through ethnographic attention to the dynamics between teachers and students, this chapter examines pedagogical methods in Conakry’s private dance troupes. It demonstrates how gerontocratic and patriarchal models of authority are widely accepted, yet are also transformed and defied as youth harness new opportunities in a neoliberal economy.Less

Spend time in New York City and, soon enough, you will encounter some of the Japanese nationals who live and work there. NYC is also home to one of the largest overseas Japanese populations in the world. Among them are artists and designers who produce cutting-edge work in fields such as design, fashion, music, and art. Part of the so-called“creative class” and a growing segment of the neoliberal economy, these Japanese migrants are usually middle-class and college-educated. They move to NYC in the hope of realizing dreams and aspirations unavailable to them in Japan. Yet the creative careers they desire are competitive, and many end up working illegally in precarious, low-paying jobs. Though they often migrate without fixed plans for return, nearly all eventually do, and their migrant trajectories are punctuated by visits home. This book offers a portrait of these Japanese creative migrants living and working in NYC. At its heart is a universal question—how do adults reinvent their lives? In the absence of any material or social need, what makes it worthwhile for people to abandon middle-class comfort and home for an unfamiliar and insecure life? The book explores these questions in four different venues patronized by New York's Japanese. The story of Japanese migrant artists in NYC is both a story about Japan and a way of examining Japan from beyond its borders.Less

This chapter examines how the neoliberal economy permeates into everyday practices of local lives, enabled by the support of local infrastructures. As India defines its place in the global economy as the high-tech solution center for business operations, new forms of work and work environments have emerged in the communication and information-technology sectors. The media in the United States and India glamorize these jobs and depict the employees as enjoying their fiber-optic journey into a new identity. Indeed, a popular thread of reportage claims that call-center jobs have liberated Indian youth and turned them into avid consumers, thereby providing a necessary push to the traditionalism of Indian society, especially with regard to women. However, the ways in which gender issues are set into motion by globalization are far more complex. The chapter thus assesses how new media technologies are reorganizing labor practices and everyday life for women in India.Less

This chapter evaluates the case of Australian state (Labor) governments. It outlines four distinctive state Labor governments in Australia in the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. In all cases, Labor held office for a relatively sustained period of time, before eventually losing. These state Labor governments offered a distinctive approach to governance that reshaped and renewed the trajectory of social democracy, especially in the face of neoliberal economic settings. Yet, in almost all these cases, these Labor governments were ejected from office. However, in contrast to some of the other cases in this volume, Labor has regained power in many of the state jurisdictions. So, while the Labor model of ‘strategic government’ might have passed, there might be further lessons here about how Labor can regain power.Less
