At the end of the sixteenth century parallel debates arose in both Catholic and Reformed areas of Europe on the role of divine grace and human free will. Augustine's works against the Pelagians played a prominent part in this discussion. The debates shaped the development of orthodox thought in each of the confessional settings. This chapter focuses on two of the key places for these debates, Catholic Leuven (the Baianist controversy) and Protestant Leiden (the Arminian controversy), to compare and assess the dynamics between public opinion, expressed in different media of communication (such as sermons, songs, pamphlets and plays) and academic scholarship (esp. the contributions by Michel Baius, Robert Bellarmine and Gerardus Joannes Vossius on heresiology and the history of the early Church).Less

Speech communities develop to express particular cultural traits and their language may be used only for a specific function as in the Guiannée. Members of a speech community may belong to more than one language community. The Guiannée becomes a medium of communication, replacing everyday language and connecting the Franco-American communities. Other linguistic symbols include music, which crosses cultural boundaries, and signs in French identifying historical homes, streets, and businesses. The historic homes and other architectural buildings represent the material symbols. The Calvary, the chalice, the religious celebrations around Christmas and New Year’s Eve reflect the religious symbols for the Franco-American identity. The continuity of this identity extends to public demonstrations in colonial disguise because of budget cuts that closed the French historical sites, eliminating the community’s efforts to express their cultural heritage. The Guiannée, among other celebrations, symbolizes the continuity of a common heritage.Less
