This chapter examines the economic reforms for capital formation and economic transformation, as well as the estimation of aggregate investment in Korea under Japanese rule between 1905 and 1945. The reform measures examined are those that removed economic and political obstacles, and those that established a new infrastructure to accommodate the workings of a government-controlled but market-oriented economy aimed at promoting capital formation and economic development. The estimation of investment considered not only the aggregate sum, but also the different nationalities (namely, Japanese, foreigners, and Koreans). The chapter also evaluates the impact of foreign investment, especially that of the Japanese, on Korean investment in terms of catalytic, linkage, oppression effects, as well as the benefits derived from external economies. Investment in human capital is assessed in terms of the overall expansion of the school system, student enrollments, and educational opportunities for Japanese and Koreans. The analysis includes private education, particularly that of the Christian missionaries, which played an important role in educating future Korean leaders.Less

This chapter reviews the Ukraine's response to its HIV epidemic. Despite the difficult transition towards a democratic system of governance and a struggling market-oriented economy, and the relative novelty of the HIV epidemic, the government of Ukraine engaged in numerous efforts to face the problems and respond to the epidemic, either directly or through partners and non-government organizations. At the same time, the country has recognized the need to step up its efforts to contain the epidemic and has successfully secured additional funding in order to do so. The biggest challenge is to scale up interventions that appear to be successful. Although some information is available, better understanding is required about the effectiveness and efficiency of interventions.Less

This book is a study of the contemporary cultural production of Portuguese-speaking Africa and its critical engagement with globalization in the aftermath of colonialism, especially since the advent of multiparty politics and market-oriented economies. Exploring the evolving relationship of Lusophone Africa with Portugal, its former colonial power, and Brazil, this book situates the countries on the geopolitical map of contemporary global forces. Drawing from popular music, film, literature, cultural history, geopolitics, and critical theory to investigate the postcolonial condition of Portuguese-speaking Africa, the book offers an entirely original discussion of world music phenomenon Cesária Évora, as well as the most thorough examination to date of Lusophone African cinema and of Angolan post-civil-war fiction. The book evokes the rich multidimensionality of this community of African nations as a whole and of its individual parts: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and Mozambique, and São TomÉ and Príncipe since they gained their independence in the mid-1970s. In doing so, he puts forth a conceptual framework for understanding, for the first time, recent cultural and historical developments in Portuguese-speaking Africa.Less

This book has explored the migration history and economic transnationalism of Yunnanese migrants in Burma, shedding light into their mercantile dynamism within the context of the intricate politico-economic environment in the country. It has shown how travel has enabled migrant Yunnanese to seek opportunities and success, one that has contributed to their frequent border crossing, geographically and figuratively. This epilogue presents a dialogue between two Yunnanese migrants, Zhang Dage and Li Dage, on the subject of mules and horses. It discusses the decline of mule caravans and their replacement by overloaded trucks, buses, and motorcycles following Burma's transition from a socialist regime to a market-oriented economy. This shift has allowed Yunnanese migrants in Burma to assume a substantial role in transportation ventures and the import–export trade.Less

In the 1980s and 1990s, successive United Kingdom governments enacted a series of reforms to establish a more market-oriented economy, closer to the American model and further away from its Western European competitors. Today, the United Kingdom is one of the least regulated economies in the world, marked by transformed welfare and industrial relations systems and broad privatization. Virtually every industry and government program has been affected by the economic reforms, from hospitals and schools to labor unions and jobless benefit programs. This book focuses on the labor and product market reforms that directly impacted productivity, employment, and inequality. The questions asked are provocative: How did the United Kingdom manage to stave off falling earnings for lower paid workers? What role did the reforms play in rising income inequality and trends in poverty? At the same time, what reforms also contributed to reduced unemployment and the accelerated growth of real wages? The comparative microeconomic approach of this book yields the most credible evaluation possible, focusing on closely associated outcomes of particular reforms for individuals, firms, and sectors.Less
