In public health, the use of research synthesis in the interest of improving population health outcomes has gained wide acceptance, coupled with the recognition that meaningful translation and dissemination must also occur if new knowledge is to influence health policy and programme decisions. But an integrated approach to knowledge generation, synthesis, dissemination, uptake, and evaluation has yet to be realized in most public health settings. This chapter discusses the advantages of knowledge synthesis approaches to support public health decision making, perspectives on the translation of knowledge for different purposes, and the importance of creating institutional capacity to support evidence-informed public health policies.Less

This chapter explores the dilemmas we face from our disaggregation of the world, reflected in public policies and economic incentives that encourage us to take apart the world in order to analyse, understand, and ultimately control it. Design represents a contrary process of reintegrating the broken relations, dysfunctions, and misconnections by synthesizing our knowledge about the world into greater wholes. This chapter examines a set of strategies designers use to reconnect the disjointed reality around us, with an example of how well-designed technology can help us all do the same.Less
