This chapter gives a brief overview of emergent taxonomies of disciplinarities in scholarship, and documents the engagement with these as ‘the Interdisciplinary Project’ within the Evidence Programme. It gives a situated and provisional interdisciplinary account of the process of the programme over time that is designed to evoke the experience as much as the emergent understanding of interdisciplinary work. The chapter aims to make the unfamiliarity of the processes of interdisciplinary work more intelligible and elucidate what is at stake in an interdisciplinary approach to interdisciplinarity.Less

This chapter sums up the key findings of this study on the importance of teamwork in palliative care. The results indicate that the development of most teams has been an evolutionary process, dictated by availability of people with vision and commitment to palliative care, the availability of finance, a variety of settings in which to be located, and a willingness of professionals and users to explore together creative ways of working and offering a service. The findings also suggest that the ability to manage ‘difference’ is a core skill for interdisciplinary working as it allows members to avoid stereotypical behaviour and acting on assumptions.Less

This book articulates what it is to do collaborative interdisciplinary research drawing on projects from the UK based Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Connected Communities programme. This book tells stories of the value of collaborative research between universities and communities. It offers a set of resources for people who are interested in doing interdisciplinary research across universities and communities. It provides a lexicon of key ideas that researchers might find useful when approaching this kind of work. The book aims to enhance ways of doing collaborative research in order to improve the ways in which that kind of research is practiced and understood. Nine chapters, based on particular projects, articulate this value in different ways drawing on different research paradigms. Chapters include discussions of tangible and intangible value, an articulation of performing and animation as forms of knowing, explorations of such initiatives as community evaluation, a project on the role of artists in collaborative projects and ways in which tools such as community evaluation, mapping and co-inquiry can aid communities and universities to work together. Chapters also focus on the translation of such research across borders and the legacy of such research within universities and communities. The book ends by mapping the future directions of such research.Less

Several branches of social science have sought to generate greater understanding of the ways that people work together to build power and exercise greater control over issues of concern to them. This book examines this existing interdisciplinary work, and seeks to simultaneously integrate and advance it. This chapter describes the Wisconsin Uprising as an example of a systems change effort that did not produce its intended effects in the sociopolitical arena. The fact that many observers and leaders were surprised by the outcome illustrates the importance of careful attention to topics of community power and empowerment. The chapter then summarizes the basic arguments and explains the contents, organization, and intended uses of the book.Less
