This chapter examines the interdisciplinary issues and strategies relevant to a patch dynamics approach as it is applied to urban ecological systems. Many of the issues are common to a wide range of interdisciplinary research topics and fields. Some are specific to patch dynamics, and a few are specific to patch dynamics applied to urban ecological systems. Based upon this assessment, this chapter reviews the benefits and burdens of interdisciplinary research as practiced using patch dynamics. It suggests some practical mechanics or effective practices to encourage successful programs of research, in order to reveal how an interdisciplinary patch dynamics approach can invigorate studies of urban ecological systems and confront the essential issues of twenty-first century cities.Less

This chapter explores the history of an interdisciplinary research program on the social, economic, cultural, and psychological determinants of health and the biological pathways by which they operate. The study dealt with the inevitable resistance to interdisciplinary research by, initially, breaking it up into small nonthreatening chunks and only later attempting to prove that the whole was greater than the sum of parts. A particular problem was that the research was addressing social inequalities in health. When the political climate was unfavorable, such research was seen to be, at best, irrelevant and, at worst, threatening. When the political climate in Britain changed, yesterday's pure academic research became today's applied science.Less

This chapter describes an interdisciplinary research program that studied individual and group differences in the risk for hypertension and heart disease. The differences studied include ones relating to: gender and racial group; family history of hypertension; personality and psychosocial traits like hostility, pessimism, and low social resources; and high versus low cardiovascular and renal responders to lab stressors. Among the findings is that potential behavioral risk factors should be studied in combination with markers of genetic risk for hypertension. The chapter also discusses the factors that encouraged this interdisciplinary research (including access to medical school colleagues and resources and NIH support) and the factors that impeded this work.Less

This chapter presents an overview of recent findings on the neural substrates of emotion. It illustrates the confluence between findings at the animal level, recent studies of humans using non-invasive brain-imaging methods, and the study of patients with localized brain lesions. The development of non-invasive imaging methods has provided an extraordinary window on the study of neural circuitry in intact people and has catalyzed an unusual hybrid of disciplines working collaboratively, most notably physics, neuroscience, and psychology. The implications of this new interdisciplinary hybrid for scientific training are enormous since graduate education must keep pace with the rapid blurring of disciplinary boundaries. Some examples of how this might occur are offered.Less

This chapter describes a collaborative interdisciplinary program to elucidate the links and underlying mechanisms of psychophysiological relations and their implications for health. This ranges from psychophysiological studies in humans to neural and physiological investigations in animals. Work on basic patterns of autonomic control has helped clarify psychophysiological relationships, their links to multiple levels of functional organization, and their implications for health. Additional studies of brain mechanisms have revealed important neural systems and processes that may underlie cognitive contributions to anxiety and autonomic control.Less

Despite the constructive effects of a strong theoretical and conceptual basis for interdisciplinary research (IDR), no generally accepted framework has been formulated. Because of this, scholars have attempted to categorize the necessary prerequisites for the said type of study in two major divisions: external factors—which consist of problem features, reinforcement schedule, available and accessible resources, and organizational context; and internal elements—comprised of employee characteristics, management style, essential skills, project structure, and environment for group dynamics. This chapter discusses the implications of these conditions, along with their detailed description and use, to the generation of data, the analysis, and the overall success of interdisciplinary inquiries. Encountered problems are only the effects of insufficient principles and methods in employing an interdisciplinary technique to understand a specific phenomenon.Less

This chapter presents an interdisciplinary research program in Miami that focused on group-based, cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) interventions among HIV-infected individuals. It begins with a brief introduction to the common language that has allowed the research team to share and integrate basic concepts. It then discusses how psychosocial variables that affect quality of life in individuals with HIV can influence the subclinical markers of disease that are associated with disease progression and mortality. This is followed by discussion of the revolution in HIV patient management brought about by combination therapy and the advent of protease inhibitors.Less

Establishing the relationships between the preconditions of interdisciplinary research organizations (IDROs)—commonly academic institutions and science organizations—and the possible life cycle given optional external conditions is the central topic in this chapter. The authors conducted case studies of three IDROs, which are not built to deal with particular and detailed problems or collections of problems. Also, they made use three paradigms grounded by the premises of organizational psychology and decision-making processes so as to acquire alternative outlooks and predictions in determining the resilience of IDROs in adapting to dynamic situations. Such conceptual paradigms are the rational-decision approach, the organizational behavior/bounded rationality model, and the political bureaucratic actions prototype. Each theory puts forward the establishment and actualization of specific goals and the search for dependable structures in order to further improve the stability and competence of IDROs.Less

Industry and academic scientists view scientific and technical predicaments as fields that require an interdisciplinary method. With the increased interest about interdisciplinary research in universities, campus supervisory bodies must give considerable attention to this kind of inquiry. While a cross-disciplinary perspective provides positive contributions in both a conceptual and practical sense, there will always be conflicts encountered during the execution of such a type of research. Epistemological concerns and conceptual issues are implanted in the organizational and cognitive complexities of both academic and industrial institutions. Other problems arise from geographical barriers, time limitations, reciprocal neglect of the existence and needs of others, and lack of social orientation. In this regard, the chapter presents a theoretical paradigm that can explain the occurrence of conflicts and its management.Less

This chapter discusses an interdisciplinary research program: The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) in San Francisco. CAPS was founded in 1986 with a principal emphasis on primary prevention. One of the first findings reported by researchers was that after a diagnosis of HIV seropositive, men either in nonmonogamous relationships or not in a relationship reported substantial reductions in high-risk but not low-risk sexual behaviors. Another early finding was that the use of recreational drugs during sex, the number of drugs used, and the frequency of combining sex and drugs were all positively associated with risky sexual activity.Less

It also details how to move into the mentor/consultant role as one's experience grows. The use of investigators from multiple disciplines, moving towards translational forms, and bridging scientific disciplines will maximize the likelihood that research findings will be used. The different forms of complex teams, their creation, expertise areas, and sustainment are discussed. The chapter closes by detailing the use of consultants, their pay, rights, and selection.Less

This chapter presents an overview of the three chapters (Chapters 2-4) in Part I of the book. The chapters illustrate the important contributions of multilevel integrative analyses to the understanding of these basic mechanisms and to the delineation of the etiology of cardiovascular disease. Each represents a program of research that exemplifies scientific synergism, extending beyond the technical or scientific capacity of a single investigator. Each also uses new and emerging methods and technologies that require multidisciplinary collaborations (e.g., biomedical engineers, cardiologists, biopsychologists, health psychologists).Less

This chapter describes the history of the scientific collaboration between the authors, Jay Kaplan and Steve Manuck, which represents the pairing of two disciplines — physical anthropology (primatology) (Kaplan) and psychology (Manuck). In a series of studies in cynomolgus monkeys, the researchers demonstrate that stressful circumstances and an individual's social position (status) within a group influence coronary artery atherosclerosis, the pathologic process that produces vulnerability to heart disease.Less

Each of the chapters tells a story about a successful interdisciplinary outcome focused on certain aspects of the mechanisms of mind-body interaction. The chapters review research extending from molecular approaches in animals to brain imaging in humans. In addition to the presentation of basic, normative phenomena, they also feature the study of individual differences.Less
