During the implementation and expansion of interdisciplinary activities in Brazil's industrial government-owned research centers, misunderstandings arise between the two major divisions of research and development institutes: line and administrative employees. The first category is assigned in the progression of research, while the latter is expected to provide back-up services to attain the tasks of the line personnel. Mutual support between the line and the staff determine the efficient and beneficial realization of the organization's objectives. However, more often than not, attainment of goals is hindered by relational gaps between the two R&D groups. In this regard, 150 participants were asked to give their opinions on—and specifically on the possible causes of—these conflicts. In doing so, company authorities would have ideas on the factors that lead such circumstances, and eventually avoid their occurrence.Less

In an increasingly globalized world, place matters more than ever. That is certainly the case in Appalachian studies—a field that brings scholars, activists, artists, and citizens together around a region to contest misappropriations of resources and power and combat stereotypes of isolation and intolerance. In Appalachia in Regional Context: Place Matters, the diverse ways in which place is invoked, the person who invokes it, and the reasons behind that invocation all matter greatly. In this collection, scholars and artists are assembled from a variety of disciplines to broaden the conversation. The book begins with chapters challenging conventional representations of Appalachia by exploring theoretically the relationships among regionalism, globalism, activism, and everyday experience. Other chapters examine, for example, foodways, depictions of Appalachian gendered and racialized identity in popular culture, the experiences of rural LGBTQ youth, and the pitfalls and promises of teaching regional studies. Poems by the renowned social critic bell hooks interleave the chapters and add context to reflections on the region. Drawing on cultural anthropology, sociology, geography, media studies, political science, gender and women’s studies, ethnography, social theory, art, music, and literature, this volume furthers the exploration of new perspectives on one of America’s most compelling and misunderstood regions.Less

This chapter outlines the unifying new efforts that led to modern psycholinguistics, in order to form a practical science of the users of language. It first takes a look at the 1950 Conference on Speech Communication, where the different papers presented reveal that engineers, mathematicians, biophysicists, etc. did not consider behaviorism as a vital feature of communication. It then identifies some developments in Britain that contributed to psycholinguistics, including Colin Cherry's ‘cocktail party effect’ and Dennis Fry's interdisciplinary perspective in the analysis of speech communication. The next section focuses on other developments on brain and language in certain countries, including Russia, the United States, and Italy. It also discusses Géza Révèsz, his ‘contact theory’, and a symposium on thinking and speaking that was held in Amsterdam. This chapter concludes with a discussion on old and new approaches in developmental psycholinguistics and the state of general psycholinguistics since 1951.Less

This introductory chapter describes the topic of the book as well as its conceptual framework. It is a theoretical and methodological reflection on the study of radicalism in early modern Britain. It states the terms of the scholarly debate about the appropriateness of using the “radical” label in an early modern context. It thus identifies and describes the various scholarly approaches to radicalism as well as the historiographical framework they relate to. The authors present two case studies to illustrate their theoretical assumptions. The first concerns the seventeenth-century “radical” newsbook The Moderate. The second case study is a presentation of the role that the “radical” New Model Army soldier Edward Sexy played as a conveyor of ideas in France during the Fronde in the early 1650s. By focusing on this actor of cultural transfer the authors wish to prove that the study of radicalism in Britain is best apprehended in a transnational context.Less

Chinese cyber espionage is commonly portrayed in the West as a major threat to economic and national security. From China’s perspective, the United States poses a major cyberthreat to other countries because of its outsized influence over the Internet, willingness to use cyber weapons against its adversaries, and exploitation of major firms like Microsoft and Google for intelligence. Mistrust and confusion have complicated Internet politics on both sides of the Pacific. To get beyond the hype, an understanding of China and cybersecurity requires a combination of international and interdisciplinary perspectives. This book brings a balance of technical, political, economic, legal, and strategic analysis by authors from China, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Even though the contributors to this volume do not always agree with one another—an important point in itself—they reveal underlying political and economic dynamics that will remain relevant even as new facts and opinions emerge in a fast-changing domain. This volume contributes substantively to our understanding of China and cybersecurity, both complex topics on their own, by exploring how China’s domestic political and economic system shapes its cyber activities. The collaboration also stands as an example of how Chinese and Western experts can work together to improve trust and understanding in an area of great mutual concern.Less
