Collaborative and multi-disciplinary research is increasingly encouraged in research, however increased collaboration also raises ethical considerations. This chapter discusses various types of collaborative research, strengths and potential problems in collaboration, and guidelines for enhancing collaborative relationships. It addresses such concerns as differing motivations, expectations and work styles, power differentials, and disciplinary norms and cultures that can create difficulties within collaborative relationships. There is also a discussion of university policies and responsibilities related to collaborative research arrangements when there is extramural funding involved or the potential for patenting or copyrighting new materials/products that are developed. A checklist of items that should be considered and discussed when entering into collaborative relationships is included.Less

This chapter discusses the search for the wildlife reservoir of SARS-CoV. It starts by presenting the case for extending the search for the zoonotic reservoir in terms of both geographical area and the range of species investigated. It highlights regional ecological shifts associated with an illegal international wildlife trade and the growing ‘bush-meat’ trade, which simultaneously favours the emergence of new zoonotic infection risks to humans and poses the primary threat to biodiversity across the Indochina Hotspot. The chapter concludes with the presentation of possible solutions to this problem, including interdisciplinary collaboration with vertebrate and conservation biologists with specialist knowledge of potential host species and the wildlife trade.Less

This chapter examines psychologists’ career-long policy journeys. The first section of the chapter centers on psychologists’ multiple policy involvements during the course of their careers, with specific focus on the nature of these multiple involvements. Six characteristics of these involvements are described. The second section of the chapter focuses on three distinctive aspects of a policy career that interviewees highlight as particularly important for the field moving forward. The importance of these aspects resides in their respective contributions to expanding the quality, effectiveness, and scope of policy influence. The three distinctive aspects are interdisciplinary collaboration, policy-related leadership positions, and international policy involvement.Less

Despite being commonplace in American households a generation ago, corporal punishment of children has been subjected to criticism and shifting attitudes in recent years. Many school districts have banned it, and many child advocates recommend that parents no longer spank or strike their children. This book taps into the expertise of social science scholars and researchers who address issues of corporal punishment, a subject that is now characterized as a key issue in child welfare. The chapters discuss corporal punishment, its use, causes, and consequences, drawing on a wide array of comparative, psychological, and sociological theories. Together, they clarify the analytical issues and lay a strong foundation for future research and interdisciplinary collaboration.Less

For the analysis of social innovation and marginalization processes, the Extended Social Grid Model (ESGM) proposes a plural focus on social sources of power—cultural, economic, security-related, political, natural, and artefactual—and how these congeal and entwine in the cognitive frames, social networks, and institutions of a time and place. Drawing especially from sociologists Jens Beckert and Michael Mann, the approach is committed to explanatory pluralism and with it a thesis that the explanation of social change is irreducible to a single source of power (Mann) or to a single social force (Beckert). Drawing on the capabilities approach, as pioneered by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, a further, normative commitment is ethical individualism. It puts the evaluative focus on the effect of social innovations on individuals. Thus, the model requires an interdisciplinary collaboration between economics, philosophy, and sociology that is explored in the subsequent chapters of the book.Less

Although all great teaching should be contextually specific, music teachers frequently lack the time and the support to adapt their music program structure to meet the evolving needs of their particular community and students. This chapter is practical in nature, offering a template for invigorating your program and aligning the content of your curriculum to meet the needs of your students. This process includes a philosophical contemplation of defining what “success” means for your particular music program, envisioning concrete goals, understanding the expectations of important stakeholders, and taking inventory of existing resources as you imagine different possibilities for your music program. The concept of a “Dream Idea” is introduced as a way to invigorate your music program, along with strategies for motivating students to become personally invested in the music program and classroom.Less
