Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our times, yet also seemingly intractable. This book draws together the state-of-the-art thinking in anthropology, approaching climate change as a nexus of nature, culture, science, politics, and belief. The book reveals new ways of thinking about the complex relationships between society and climate, science and the state, certainty and uncertainty, global and local that are manifested in climate change debates. The contributors address three major areas of inquiry: how climate change issues have been framed in previous times compared to the present; how knowledge about climate change and its impacts is produced and interpreted by different groups; and how imagination plays a role in shaping conceptions of climate change.Less

This chapter asks whether David Brown's forays into popular culture have gone far enough. It argues that Christian theology needs to be more self-critical about its cultural assumptions when relating to media and the arts. It must also be more inter-disciplinary, more attentive to actual religious practice and undertake even broader engagement with non-ecclesiastical experience and resources than Brown has ventured. In this way, the chapter suggests, a theological methodology more appropriate for Christian systematics today will emerge. Such a methodology would be more closely linked with the ordinary, human, social, affective practices in and through which people, religious and not, make meaning. It would also be more deeply shaped by incarnation, general revelation, common grace, the imago Dei and pneumatology.Less

Building upon a review of the main points of each chapter of the book, the concluding chapter also discusses integrative and over-arching issues such as the need for greater inter-disciplinarity in urban planning between the social sciences and urban design which could happen through developing our spatial analysis methods such as critical cartography. The chapter also makes clarifying qualifications about the intention and findings of the book, such as what is generalizable and specific to Vietnam. Sidewalk City is about more than the sidewalk itself; it is an inquiry into how we might become more cognizant of overlooked spaces and the overlooked peoples in them. This book proposed experimenting with alternative mapping as a way to navigate our way to greater urban awareness.Less

The analytic sophistication demonstrated in this volume can be traced back to pioneering works in studies of prehistoric human ecology and what is now recognized as geoarchaeology. The combining of several subfields in geology, geomorphology, hydrology, soil morphology, and advanced dating methods have resulted in the realization of many of the aspirations of the inter-disciplinary research that was advocated for in previous decades. This chapter contrasts the drainage basin morphology along the lower Southeastern U.S., with its expansive Coastal Plains stands, with the shorter river valleys in the northeast, which are controlled by bedrock. The alluvial valleys in the Southeast combined with the milder climates throughout the Pleistocene set this area of the U.S. apart for prime geomorphological and geoarchaeological studies. These regions are contrasted with landforms in the near East at similar time periods, emphasizing the value in global comparisons.Less

During the past quarter-century, public awareness about invasive species has reached unprecedented levels around the world, but a comparable transformation in policy is lagging. Basic knowledge about invasive species is still seriously lacking in multiple policy-relevant areas, notably risk assessment. Small-scale impacts justify the fight against invasive species, while biodiversity’s broad-scale resilience offers hope for restoration of habitats and native species. The piecemeal approach to invasive species policy needs a unifying framework, guided by an overarching ethic that transcends time and place in addressing the “appropriateness” of non-native species in our globalizing world. Such an ethic, while acknowledging that some invasive species become permanently embedded in ecosystems, must utilize species origin as its foundational principle, rather than species impact/benefit or ecosystem service. The development of a policy ethic for invasive species requires interdisciplinary collaboration, with ecologists in a leadership role.Less

This penultimate chapter shows that the perspective developed in the book has a number of practical applications. For example, it can clarify what kinds of expectations comparative psychologists should have about the mental mechanisms of different species, and provides advice for neuroscientists about how to identify the remnants of the major transitions in brain tissue. We also argue that having a rigorous vocabulary for talking about how behavior is produced can assist everyday communications, between academics in different disciplines, as well as in the media. This could have a general salutary effect on public discourse about our own behavior and its causes (e.g., the interminable nature-nurture debate).Less

Feminist legal research involves an integrated method of research focusing on the problems of women in relation to law and legal system. It brings to the surface the subjugated knowledge about women’s experience, asks the woman question, raises consciousness for social transformation and initiates remedial action. The goal of feminist legal research is serving the interests of women by using inductive reasoning. It has historical background which became intensive since 1970s. A sound understanding of feminist perspective supports this kind of research. Various steps include asking the woman question, feminist practical reasoning, consciousness-raising action, and building of feminist knowledge. The latter in turn entails methods of rational empirical position, standpoint feminism, and post modernism. Since truth is a matter of one’s position and differs from person to person, various viewpoints should be considered. Reading between the lines, interdisciplinary approach and use of multi-method help this kind of research.Less
