This chapter covers the period from 1500 to 1830, often referred to as the colonial period. The discussion focuses on Spanish America. It describes the intellectual training and social placement of lawyers, who received a formal legal education and whose knowledge of the law was certified by the universities and the audiencias of the era. How did they contribute to the consolidation of the state in the colonies? What were their relations with the colonists, the indigenous peoples, the imported African slaves, and the majority mestizo group that resulted from the mix of all the races? The chapter starts with a description of the prevailing bureaucracies before turning to the intellectual training and social placement of lawyers.Less
