This chapter presents an essay on the leadership role of the Roman Catholic Church and the American federal government in raising the question of renewal. In both cases, there was strong opposition for different reasons. In the case of the church, the opposition proceeded from a reading of the historical past to the conclusion of institutional immutability, while the opposition on the American scene derives its strength far more from an analysis of the dangers in our contemporary situation. This chapter suggests that the issue in both situations is rooted in the same historical matrix, the 16th century reformulations of Western experience.Less
