This chapter addresses issues of identity and rootlessness as expressed through poetry. It focuses in on the second generation of Afghan refugees who were portrayed as a confused generation subjected to the ‘pains of exile’ and ‘identity crisis’. It explores the representations of Afghans in Iran and examines the ways in which the Iran-educated Afghans responded and defied their marginalization through their own discourse and poetry. By examining the poetry of these second generation Afghan refugees, the social transformations taking place in this group or refugees and the tensions in the Iranian society are illuminated. These poems illustrate the distressing ambivalence experienced by the second-generation Afghan refugees in Iran.Less

Many of the problems Europe faces in coming to terms with a rising China stem from domestic politics. The European political landscape has changed as the focus of political contestation has moved away from ideology to issue and identity politics that is characteristic of post-material societies. In consequence of these shifts, political party systems have gradually become more fragmented. Fragile governing coalitions in many EU member states diminish the incentives European of decision-makers to exercise leadership and invest personal political capital to upgrade relations with China. As Europe finds itself in a process of relative economic and political decline vis-is China, public opinion about China has turned increasingly negative.Less

This chapter analyzes past interactions between Japan and South Korea, highlighting their shared history which influences their bilateral relationship. It examines three rationales shaping prospects for cooperation between the two nations. The first is the fact that both countries have an alliance with the United States. Cooperation with the U.S. is an important factor shaping Korean and Japanese perceptions of their own relationship. The belief that the U.S. was distancing itself from the region during the Cold War was a major factor that enabled South Korea and Japan to work more closely together. A second rationale for improved South Korea–Japan cooperation is reflected in the “Chinese threat” school of thought, which argues that South Korea and Japan as democratic market economies should enhance cooperation to thwart the rising influence of China. The third rationale centers on obstacles to South Korea–Japan coordination and joint action against identity issues.Less

This book argues that humanistic, not just technical, meaning is a basic force in music history and an indispensable factor in how, where, and when music is heard. The book draws on a broad range of music and theory to show that the problem of musical meaning is not just an intellectual puzzle, but a musical phenomenon in its own right. How have romantic narratives involving Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata affected how we hear this famous piece, and what do they reveal about its music? How does John Coltrane's African American identity affect the way we hear him perform a relatively “white” pop standard like My Favorite Things? Why does music requiring great virtuosity have different cultural meanings to music that is not particularly virtuosic? Focusing on the classical repertoire from Beethoven to Shostakovich and also discussing jazz, popular music, and film and television music, the book uncovers the historical importance of asking about meaning in the lived experience of musical works, styles, and performances. The book demonstrates that thinking about music can become a vital means of thinking about general questions of meaning, subjectivity, and value.Less
