Rethinking Japanese Feminisms offers a broad overview of the great diversity of feminist thought and practice in Japan from the early twentieth century to the present. Drawing on methodologies and approaches from anthropology, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, literature, media studies, and sociology, each chapter presents the results of research based on some combination of original archival research, careful textual analysis, ethnographic interviews, and participant observation.
The volume is organized into sections focused on activism and activists, employment and education, literature and the arts, and boundary crossing. Some chapters shed light on ideas and practices that resonate with feminist thought but find expression through the work of writers, artists, activists, and laborers who have not typically been considered feminist; others revisit specific moments in the history of Japanese feminisms in order to complicate or challenge the dominant scholarly and popular understandings of specific activists, practices, and beliefs. The chapters are contextualized by an introduction that offers historical background on feminisms in Japan, and a forward-looking conclusion that considers what it means to rethink Japanese feminism at this historical juncture.
Building on more than four decades of scholarship on feminisms in Japanese and English, as well as decades more on women’s history, Rethinking Japanese Feminisms offers a diverse and multivocal approach to scholarship on Japanese feminisms unmatched by existing publications.Less

Chapter 4 focuses on how Hoosier feminists adapted feminism to the particular political environment of Indiana, specifically we examine feminists’ decision to forward a “low key” image to achieve greater respectability and support for the ERA in a conservative political milieu. This decision ultimately proved successful in ratification of the ERA, but also led to dissent and hard feelings within feminist coalitions as many started to see the “low key” strategy as a muzzle. This chapter explores the strategy decisions and contours of the Hoosier feminist movement rooted as it was to place.Less

This chapter outlines the purpose of the volume as a whole, which works toward the rethinking of feminisms in modern and contemporary Japan by, in some chapters, throwing light on writers, artists, activists, and laborers who have not typically been considered feminist, and, in other chapters, calling for a reconsideration of the dominant scholarly and popular understandings of specific activists, practices, and beliefs. The introduction also offers a brief history of feminisms in modern and contemporary Japan by way of providing a context for the chapters.Less

Challenging the notion that public actions and political lobbying are the women’s movement’s main tactics, this chapter traces the history of an extra-institutional form of feminism—narrative-based consciousness-raising—from its inception in the 1910s through its contemporary online expression today. Rather than a product of second-wave feminism, narrative-based consciousness-raising has always been central to the women’s movement, as the chapter shows. Narrative-based consciousness-raising as a strategy assumes that, in order to change fundamental societal institutions such as marriage, the nuclear family, and the state, men and women must first change their consciousness about themselves and society. This strategy utilizes personal life stories, or life narratives, to reveal the collective roots of personal problems in order to effect this personal change. The persistence of this strategy through three waves of feminist activism demonstrates the value of raising collective awareness for fighting gendered oppression. The author argues that this continuity is a result of institutionalized knowledge and a response to similar historical circumstances, rather than direct connections between waves.Less

In the Introduction to this volume, the authors attempt to reflect on the place of Wollstonecraft studies in the recovery project through the attempts to (re-) introduce texts by women in academic philosophy; to present a brief biography of Mary Wollstonecraft, and to introduce each chapter in the volume. This introduction also presents aspects of Wollstonecraft scholarship: a study of her intellectual background, from her possible acquaintance with ancient texts to her engagement with eighteenth-century political philosophy; and her social and political thought, showing that it goes beyond feminism and deals with questions of children and animal rights, property rights and slavery. The chapter concludes with a more detailed look at her specifically republican outlook on freedom.Less

Interest in the contribution made by women to the history of philosophy is burgeoning and intense research is underway to recover their works, many of which have been lost or overlooked. At the forefront of this revival is interest in the works of Mary Wollstonecraft. While she has long been studied by feminists and later discovered by political scientists, philosophers have only recently begun to recognize the value of her work for their discipline. This volume brings together current leading scholarship that introduces readers to Wollstonecraft’s range as a moral and political philosopher of note, taking both a historical perspective and applying her thinking to current academic debates. Subjects include Wollstonecraft’s ideas on love and respect, friendship and marriage, motherhood, property in the person, and virtue and the emotions, as well as the application her thought has for current thinking on relational autonomy, and animal and children’s rights. A major theme of the book places her within the republican tradition of political theory and analyses the contribution she makes to its conceptual resources.Less
