Chapter 5 compares Rhys's use of the stereotype of the Creole heiress in Wide Sargasso Sea with Pramoedya's use of a similar stereotype in This Earth of Mankind. The chapter situates this stereotype within a comparative linguistic and literary context, considering also the example of Louis Couperus's Dutch novel, The Hidden Force (1900). Examining this stereotype as part of the legacy of changing colonial and postcolonial senses of the word Creole itself, the comparison reveals how the Creole heiress serves as a linguistic and literary point of reference for contested genealogies of modernism and modernity.Less

The Masses Are the Ruling Classes handles a neglected theme: social policy in the United States is determined by mass consent. Contemporary explanations of decision making in the United States typically attribute power over policy making to a variety of hidden forces and illegitimate elites, holding the masses innocent of their own problems. Yet the enormous openness of the society and nearly universal suffrage sustain democratic consent as more plausible than the alternatives (conspiracy, propaganda, usurpation, autonomous government, and imperfect pluralism). Despite the multitude of problems that the nation faces, its citizens are not oppressed. The core problem that blocks the maturation of American society is not democratic participation, but its content; popular preferences are romantic rather than pragmatic. None of these programs achieve their ends of poverty reduction or behavioral change. Rather, they persist as testimonials to America’s romantic preferences. Thus, if the American people are largely responsible for social policy, then they are also responsible for the problems that beset the nation, notably enormous economic and social inequality. If the masses rule policy choice, then the persistence of material and social deprivation that lies easily within the economic capacities of the nation to address suggests that the nation abides its inequalities and suffering. The commitment of American society to policy romanticism and its rejection of pragmatism blocks its social development.Less

The many-body theory combines ideas of thermodynamics with ideas of mechanics. In this introductory chapter, the symbiosis of these two different fields of physics is demonstrated on overly simplified models. We explore the principles of finite-range forces to show the twofold nature of virial corrections. Infrequent collisions with a large deflection angle lead to collision integrals and rather frequent encounters with deflections on small angles act as a mean field. The (mean-field) corrections to drift result in the internal pressure and the nonlocal correction to the collisions results in the effect of the molecular volumes. The concept of distribution functions is introduced and the measure of information as entropy. The binary correlation allows one to distinguish tails and cores of the interaction potential. The concept of binary correlation is thus behind the intuitive picture of the kinetic equation.Less

The classical non-ideal gas shows that the two original concepts of the pressure based of the motion and the forces have eventually developed into drift and dissipation contributions. Collisions of realistic particles are nonlocal and non-instant. A collision delay characterizes the effective duration of collisions, and three displacements, describe its effective non-locality. Consequently, the scattering integral of kinetic equation is nonlocal and non-instant. The non-instant and nonlocal corrections to the scattering integral directly result in the virial corrections to the equation of state. The interaction of particles via long-range potential tails is approximated by a mean field which acts as an external field. The effect of the mean field on free particles is covered by the momentum drift. The effect of the mean field on the colliding pairs causes the momentum and the energy gains which enter the scattering integral and lead to an internal mechanism of energy conversion. The entropy production is shown and the nonequilibrium hydrodynamic equations are derived.
