This chapter examines the experiences of adolescents who are homosexual or still confused about their gender identity or preference. Adolescents with unresolved issues about homosexuality generally are not open with their feelings or questions. Unlike heterosexual adolescents who easily find similar others among peers fairly soon after entering adolescence, uncertain adolescents often hide their homosexuality, making it hard to identify similar others and gain their support. This chapter first considers the distinction between gender identity and gender preference and goes on to explore how nonacceptance of homosexuals by their adolescent peers affect their comparison findings. It then discusses the attitudes of gay and lesbian adolescents about themselves.Less
