Ernie O'Malley (1897–1957) was one of the most talented and colourful of modern Irish republicans. An important IRA leader in the 1916–1923 Irish Revolution, this bookish gunman subsequently became a distinguished intellectual, and the author of two classic autobiographical accounts of the revolutionary period: On Another Man's Wound and The Singing Flame. His post-revolutionary life took on a bohemian flavour. Travelling extensively in Europe and America, he mixed with a wide range of artistic and literary figures, and devoted himself to a variety of writing projects. In his IRA career he mixed with revolutionaries such as Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera; in his post-IRA years his friends included Samuel Beckett, Louis MacNeice, John Wayne, and John Ford. This thematic biography draws on previously unseen archival sources, and introduces O'Malley to both scholarly and general readers. O'Malley's post-revolutionary life was as turbulent as his IRA years, and illuminates many persistent themes of Irish history, ranging from the origins and culture of militant republicanism and the complexities of Anglo–Irish relations to the development of intellectual and artistic life in twentieth-century Ireland.Less

The theoretical framework advanced in this book generates not just one but three reputational networks for each person: the lifetime, transitional, and posthumous reputational networks. Following the death of a notable person, a transition period occurs during which a chorus of survivors and keepers of the flame within the person’s lifetime reputational network coexist with an emerging network of writers and scholars who may never have met the biographical figure but begin to investigate, write about, and discuss the person’s lifelong conduct. Over several decades, the lifetime reputational network fades away, bowing out to a sometimes large and lively posthumous reputational network. In the case of major cultural figures, such as George Washington, the posthumous reputational network is even more extensive, encompassing most citizens of a nation and extending into posterity.Less

Flames of passion and wounds of love are then analyzed, including Teresa of Avila’s transverberation and the Mercedes graphics produced by Rose of Lima. Initially marketed as a life-saving advancement, flame retardants are now mired in controversy. Some argue that data show the chemicals are unsafe while others continue to support their use. The tactics of each side have far-reaching consequences for how we interpret new scientific discoveries. An experienced environmental sociologist, Alissa Cordner conducts more than a hundred interviews with activists, scientists, regulators, and industry professionals to isolate the social, scientific, economic, and political forces influencing environmental health policy today. Introducing “strategic science translation,” she describes how stakeholders use scientific evidence to support nonscientific goals and construct “conceptual risk formulas” to shape risk assessment and the interpretation of empirical evidence. A revelatory text for public-health advocates, Toxic Safety demonstrates that while all parties interested in health issues use science to support their claims, they do not compete on a level playing field and even good intentions can have deleterious effects.Less

Asbestos was once known as the ‘magic mineral’ because of its ability to withstand flames. Yet since the 1970s, it has become a notorious and feared ‘killer dust’ that is responsible for thousands of deaths and an epidemic that continues into the new millennium. This book gives an account of the UK asbestos health problem, providing an in-depth look at the occupational health experience of one of the world's leading asbestos companies — British asbestos giant, Turner & Newall. Based on a company archive recently released in American litigation, it gives an insight into all aspects of the asbestos hazard — dust control, workmen's compensation, government regulation, and the development of medical knowledge. In particular, the book looks at the role of industrialists, doctors, factory inspectors, and trade unionists, highlighting the failures in regulation that allowed the commercial development of a material that has been known to be lethal since at least 1900.Less

Focusing on the “flaming youth” figure of the 1920s, this chapter explores the prevalence of discussions about child marriage in works by Wharton and Fabian, exploring forms of generation-specific authority and the peculiar age-specific qualities of the “child-woman” at the center of these plots. Scenes of youthful teen girls’ slumber, which frequently overlap with middle-aged men’s sexual interests, predict many of the aspects of these relationships that interest Wharton, whose fictions imagine child marriage, then increasingly problematize the age-asymmetrical relationships involved in such unions.Less

Candle flames have a warm, yellow color that is prized as nostalgic and romantic. But why is this the color of a standard candle flame? The usual explanation given is that the color is due to minute particles of soot that result from combustion of the candle wax, heated to incandescence, and emitting blackbody radiation. But this explanation cannot be correct. The shape of the emission spectrum is not that of a blackbody spectrum, and the peak occurs at much too short a wavelength, given the flame’s temperature. So what physical phenomenon does dictate the properties of the light from a candle?Less

In 2008, both Norway and Denmark delivered major contributions to the cinematic genre of the ‘occupation drama’ (Norwegian), or ‘occupation film’ (Danish): the Norwegian film was Max Manus: Man of War (Max Manus, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, 2008) and the Danish Flame & Citron (Flammen og citronen, Ole Christian Madsen, 2008). In Scandinavia, these generic markers refer to many films set during the Second World War and depicting the fates of Danes and Norwegians in the years 1940–5, when their respective countries were occupied by Nazi Germany. Thus, both Norway and Denmark eventually came to be on the victorious allied side of the war.
The other Nordic countries had different obligations. Sweden, most importantly in the present context, was neutral and kept its independence throughout the war. This chapter will study how Max Manus: Man of War and Flame & Citron can be understood in a Swedish context, referring to Swedish history during the war, textual analyses of mainly the scenes from Sweden in the films, and the reception of the films in Sweden. That is, I analyse Norwegian and Danish perceptions of Sweden during the war, but strictly from a Swede’s point of view.Less

During the 1950s, the black theatre and night club circuit was dominated by rhythm ‘n’ blues. There was an enormous national audience for this music, and as the popularity of big dance bands waned, the music also began to interest greater numbers of white audiences. By 1953, black rhythm ‘n’ blues performers were absorbed into the great onslaught of rock ‘n’ roll. One day in late November 1951, one such group, dubbed The Five Blue Flames, and later billed as “Chris Powell and the Blue Flames”, visited Wilmington for a couple of dances. The music consisted of “mostly rhythm ‘n’ blues, jazz, mambo and calypso”, according to Vance Wilson, the tenor saxist with the band at the time. One night, after seeing Clifford Brown play during either one of the Wilmington dances or another of the Blue Flames' appearances in nearby Philadelphia, Chris Powell asked him to join his band. At what point does the ageing war hero become an impotent figure of defeated authority? Quite possibly at the point when the prescriptive pressure of performing hegemonic masculinity becomes too demanding, and the hard shell of self-control, restraint and toughness finally cracks to reveal the vulnerable body beneath. In films such as Summer of the Seventeenth Doll (1960) and Ronald Neame's Tunes of Glory (1960), John Mills would build on the innovatory fragility of Captain Anson to give some of his most impressive screen performances, becoming in the process the embodiment of a residual hegemonic masculinity struggling to cope with the demands of a changing society. Yet it was not only Mills's roles that underwent a transformation, the culture of cinema-going and the ethos of British cinema were also experiencing far-reaching and fundamental changes. This chapter examines Tunes of Glory and three other Mills films: Flame in the Streets (1961), The Singer Not the Song (1961) and The Family Way (1966).Less

This chapter analyses how Mario Bava's Black Sunday began production on 28 March at Scalera Film studios, which was considered an intense shoot that lasted six weeks and wrapped on 7 May. It describes 1960 as the 'annus mirabilis' for the industry, where the share of domestic box-office for Italian film reached 50 percent for the first time since the war. It also discusses Barbara Steele's foray into American cinema, which was a disaster and curtailed by her allegedly walking off set after a row with director Don Siegel, a few days into the making of the Elvis Presley vehicle, Flaming Star in 1960. The chapter describes marketing campaigns for Black Sunday that ramped up the promise of sex and violence. It demonstrates the American International Pictures' (AIP) liberal attitude to the cutting and shot removal of Black Sunday, which certainly nullified some of Bava's more graceful beats that faded to black during gory moments.Less

This chapter continues charting the course of Barbara’s tenure in Fox Film Corporation’s writing department and covers the beginning of her career as a silent film actress. After appearing in Harriet and the Piper (1920), Barbara swears off acting and completes the three remaining films she was hired to write for Fox. As two of these films,Flame of Youth (1920) and The Land of Jazz (1920), begin their runs in theaters, Barbara is induced by film star Douglas Fairbanks to appear in his film, The Nut (1921). Barbara’s association with Fairbanks leads to a plum role in his epic adventure, The Three Musketeers (1921), and her ultimate decision to pursue film acting, regardless of opposition from Ben Deely (recently reconciled with her) and the potential exposure of her disreputable past as Reatha Watson. Details concerning plot synopses, production, and critical reception accompany each film mentioned in this chapter.Less

Emerging contaminants in aquatic environments, including the San Francisco Bay, are of increasing concern to regulatory agencies, ecosystem managers, and the public. There is increasing evidence that many emerging contaminants have properties similar to those of the legacy contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins, and chlorinated pesticides, in that they are persistent, they bioaccumulate, and they are toxic to aquatic organisms. However, information on scope of contamination and effects of many emerging contaminants is lacking. This chapter gives a brief overview of several classes of emerging contaminants, including flame retardants, nanomaterials, pesticides, musks, antimicrobial compounds, pharmaceuticals, and perfluorinated compounds. A brief discussion on detection of emerging contaminants and the use of biomarker responses to investigate effects is also included.Less
