This chapter confronts contemporary political disappointment with the world and argues that a secular conception of morality is needed to motivate ethical commitment. Drawing on the ethical philosophies of Alain Badiou, Knud Ejler Løgstrup, and Emmanuel Levinas, the chapter demonstrates how the impossibility of fulfilling ethical demands splits the subject between itself and the impossibility of its responsibility.Less

This chapter contains a reflection by Simon Critchley regarding how Alain Badiou views ethical experience and what can be said by a subject who has experience in his work. This chapter aims to answer a query about his views and his works through understanding Badiou. Cricthley defines the structure of the ethical experience and ethical subject using theories from Kant and Heidegger. Ethical experience is the approval of a demand, a demand that requires approval, and ethical subject is a priori equal to the demand that is placed on it. The reflection continues to relate the structure of ethical experience into three applications using theories from Levinas, Lacan and Badiou. Furthermore, it connects the place of ethics and the logic of the event in Badiou's system.Less

This chapter examines the so-called mauvaise conscience and necessary sadness in relation to ethical experience. It explores what Emmanuel Levinas called mauvaise conscience experience, which was also emphasized in Jacques Derrida's Aporias and The Gift of Death. Both philosophers have suggested that ethical responsibility opens people to a certain sorrow that is not only endured but also affirmed. This chapter explains the processes involved in the affirmation of the necessary sadness.Less
