This chapter argues that the environment must be elevated to a position of prominence, not secondary to war and terrorism. For this to happen, scientists must be more effective in communicating environmental concerns so that the public consciousness can be galvanized into action. While the current focus on protection of biodiversity and the establishment of parks and reserves is important, it is inadequate by itself in preserving functional ecosystems.Less

This chapter explains how narratives of environmental concern that derive from particular Minority world contexts are not truly global. Popular images of an apparently depopulated pristine nature, such as the earth from space or the solitary polar bear, are quite literally distant from the lives of the majority. Yet, they are considered by many as foundational to galvanising environmentalism into a purportedly ‘global’ movement. This kind of affluent Minority world imaginary is problematic in several respects. Images of depopulated pristine nature conceal the fallacy of nature culture dualism, rendering invisible the vast differences within and between countries in human nature interdependence, and how children and families understand, value, and are put at risk by their environments.Less

This chapter addresses transgenic salmon, and then explores the marketing of the patented AquAdvantage salmon and the current resistance from within the salmon aquaculture industry. It also considers the competitive pressures favoring adoption of this technology and the countervailing forces that act as a brake on the technology treadmill. The scientific uncertainties, public perceptions, and competing discourses about transgenic salmon are described. Observations about regulation-centered conflicts that will likely be the focus of social resistance are presented, which is facilitated by the aquaculture industry's reluctance to embrace commercial production of transgenic salmon. A/F Protein must address salmon farmers' concerns both about efficiency reductions due to triploidy and about the costs of licensing and other expenses. Salmon farmers identify two dangers to the industry posed by environmental concerns about transgenic fish. The arguments about risks from escaped genetically engineered fish show the scientific uncertainties associated with deployment of transgenic salmon.Less

The Introduction looks at the start of the political right wing campaign to link immigration to environmental concerns. It also examines how American debates over environmental impacts of immigration raises important questions about the relationship between nature and the politics of social exclusion. It also points out the manner in which conceptions of nature are imbued with cultural assumptions and how this impacts how people look at environmental policy. It reflects on how the author’s analysis over how environmental restrictions and their opponents seek to reconfigure sovereignty is heavily influenced by Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. It examines how struggles over sovereignty are dispersed throughout social life, imbricated in claims to knowledge, scientific methodologies, social norms, and political strategies. It concludes by pointing out how like all methods, discourse analysis has its limitations, but the author’s analysis does reveal the multiple channels through which nature and sovereignty come to intersect.Less

Buildings are the nation's greatest energy consumers. Forty percent of all our energy is used for heating, cooling, lighting, or powering machines and devices in buildings. Despite decades of investment in green construction technologies, residential and commercial buildings remain stubbornly energy inefficient. This book looks beyond the technological and material aspects of green construction to examine the cultural, social, and organizational shifts that sustainable building requires, examining the fundamental challenge to centuries-long traditions in design and construction that green building represents. The chapters consider the changes associated with green building through a sociological and organizational lens. They discuss shifts in professional expertise created by new social concerns about green building, including evolving boundaries of professional jurisdictions; changing industry strategies and structures, including the roles of ownership, supply firms, and market niches; new operational, organizational, and cultural arrangements, including the mainstreaming of environmental concerns; narratives and frames that influence the perception of green building; and future directions for the theory and practice of sustainable construction.Less

The threats posed by the nuclear complex of Northwestern Russia have attracted attention in recent years. The issue of nuclear safety stands forth as the most highly profiled problem area among the three chosen to focus on in this study. In the area of nuclear safety, environmental and security concerns tend to be closely intertwined. In the area of nuclear safety, bureaucratic controversies have clearly hampered implementation. Moreover, foreign assistance has come to dominate the implementation of Russia's international nuclear safety commitments during the post-Soviet period. Some of the most serious problems encountered in implementation efforts can be ascribed to unresolved issues between Russia and the Western donor states, relating, for example, to indemnity against liability, access to nuclear sites, personnel immunity, and tax exemptions. So while there is some progress in the implementation of Russia's international nuclear safety commitments at the present moment, it is slow and it is fumbling.Less

This book focuses on the problematic relationship between legality and legitimacy when a nation (or nations) intervene in the work of other nations. The book brings together a wide range of contributors with a broad set of cases that consider when such intervention is legitimate even if it isn't legal—and vice versa. Chapters cover humanitarian intervention, nuclear nonproliferation, military intervention, international criminal tribunals, interventions driven by environmental concerns, and the export of democracy. The book argues that while some interventions may not be technically legal, they may well be legitimate (e.g., Kosovo), and also concentrates on establishing the grounds for legitimate intervention. Some cases, like Iraq, fail the test. Transnational intervention by states and international institutions has increased since the globalization wave of the 1990s and especially since 9/11. This book, by focusing on a diverse array of cases, establishes a clear framework for judging the legitimacy of such actions.Less

This chapter discusses an analysis of two examples of innovative social movement development proposals that were adopted as public policy in Brazilian Amazonia. It analyzes the factors that led to the emergence of the successful bottom-up policy proposals, social justice, linking of environmental concerns, and land rights. It also addresses the limitations and dilemmas of scaling up alternative grassroots development policies within a state power structure that is resistant to change and is dominated by agro-business interests.Less

Zoos may be able to promote conservation by communicating the need for conservation to their visitors, and particularly by creating concern about the animals. Conversations among zoo visitors have the potential to highlight the value of nature and to promote affection and empathy for animals, along with a sense of connection. Psychological research suggests that concern for others, including animals, is higher when they are perceived as more similar to the perceiver. Zoos can, and do, utilize their exhibits to promote a sense of similarity and connection to animals among visitors. We present a study in which observers of a capuchin monkey exhibit were asked to consider either similarities or differences between the monkeys and humans. Those looking for similarities attended to different attributes of the monkeys, focusing on faces and on behavior, whereas those focused on difference emphasized physical characteristics. Compared to a control condition, both groups showed greater environmental concern; providing information about human implication in environmental threats, however, increased concern among the control group. We conclude that carefully designed zoo exhibits and signage may increase care and concern for animal conservation, but that determining the best combination of information to present is a complex task.Less

Corrib gas was discovered in 1996 and its developers and some politicians originally presented it as a panacea for the socio-economic woes of rural, west Mayo. However, the reality of the project has had an opposite effect and Corrib gas has become synonymous with social upheaval, remaining un-produced eighteen years after discovery. This chapter traces the emergence of the Corrib gas conflict (1996-2005), discussing the gas discovery and the consortium's interactions with the community living in the area designated as a home for the onshore gas processing terminal and pipeline. As the consortium progressed their plans for the project, local people began to develop concerns about its location on health, safety and environmental grounds. Utilising interview data from the range of stakeholders associated with the development, this chapter illustrates the diversity of opinions towards the project and ascertains the basis of growing opposition. This chapter lays the foundation for the overall book, illustrating how flaws within the state and oil companies' approach contributed to the emergence of a conflict around the onshore location of the project, the escalation of which is examined in detail in the following chapter.Less

At the global level, religion remains to be recognized as having a fundamental influence on the development and practice of international law. The role of religion as a catalyst for environmental concern is now becoming more obvious with the links between conservation and religious obligations being united by many theological thinkers. This chapter discusses eco-deconstruction. It highlights two guiding questions: (1) Might not an econstruction—a living, developing, and materially informed deconstruction—find itself quite at home thinking through the quandaries of environmental concern? (2) Might not environmentalism provoke a certain materialistic mutation within deconstruction? This can be argued both ways—that environmentalism finds itself in an often problematic and aporetic space of posthumanistic displacement where deconstruction is particularly well equipped to offer guidance. Equally, environmental concerns can embolden deconstruction to embrace what can be called a strategic materialism, or the essential interruptibility of any and every idealization. Moreover, deconstruction's critique of presence leads effortlessly to the strange temporalities of environmentalism. The dangers people currently face are from the accumulated impacts of past practices.Less

This book chronicles the discovery and analysis of animal fossils found in one of the most important paleontological sites in the world: Porcupine Cave, located at an elevation of 9,500 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With tens of thousands of identified specimens, this site has become the key source of information on the fauna of North America's higher elevations between approximately 1 million and 600,000 years ago, a period that saw the advance and retreat of glaciers numerous times. Until now, little has been understood about how this dramatic climate change affected life during the middle Pleistocene. In addition to presenting data from Porcupine Cave, this study also presents analysis on what the data from the site show about the evolutionary and ecological adjustments that occurred in this period, shedding light on how one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns—global climate change—can influence life on earth.Less

Until now, little has been understood about how this dramatic climate change affected life during the middle Pleistocene. In addition to presenting data from Porcupine Cave, this study also presents analysis on what the data from the site show about the evolutionary and ecological adjustments that occurred in this period, shedding light on how one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns—global climate change—can influence life on earth.

This chapter discusses the responsibility of individuals, groups, and countries for rising emissions leading to climate change. The ethics of climate change require judgments to be made about the relative claims of different individuals, groups, and countries. The environmental concern begins with the family and the home, steps out into our local community, and then takes account of the nation state. The recognition of partiality has an implication for the attempts to address global warming. Partiality suggests that we should address climate change primarily because it is in our self-interest to do so. Ethics need to be grounded in human nature and the circumstances that pervade today, rather than in some future utopia. Progress on this level requires a rejection of the Kyoto-based carbon-production approach and a serious shifting of the burden toward the developed countries.Less

Can Orthodox Christianity offer unique spiritual resources especially suited to the environmental concerns of today? This book makes the case that yes, it can. This book helps answer a worldly question: why has Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch and spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians worldwide, been such a standout figure among religious leaders in his call for environmental care? This book boasts some of the most important voices within contemporary Orthodox thought both in North America and in Europe. The conclusions it presents offer a rich display of Orthodox thinking.Less

Biotechnology, a promising and sophisticated science of the twenty-first century, has also been at the centre of controversies, with its varied applications and commercial uses raising legal concerns. The book discusses the latest developments and applications of biotechnology in the modern world. It is a comprehensive study of various legal issues pertinent to biotechnology, including but not limited to intellectual property, trade policy, environmental concerns, biodiversity issues, regulatory matters, and human rights connections. In addition to providing a global perspective to these concerns, covering the subject from the standpoints of the US, Europe, and India, the book also provides insights into the regulatory canopy on biotechnology in India.Less

In viewing the time ahead, especially the next quarter century, I have been inclined to conclude that the industrial progress of India, China, Southeast Asia, and the major countries of Latin America are likely to produce a phase of rising prices in foodstuffs and raw materials and increased outlays to deal with the forces of environmental degradation. It is my hypothesis that for a time, in the early part of the 21st century, these developments will outstrip the deceleration of population. The more or less regular occurrence of such phases of demand pressure has marked the story of the world economy since the end of the 18th century. At least since about 1789, there have been successive periods when foodstuffs and raw materials were expensive and then cheap, relative to manufactured goods. From 1789 to 1920, these periods lasted about 25 years. After 1920, the cycles were much less regular and were significantly affected by wars, by the successive rise in the importance of oil, by outlays to preserve the environment, and finally by the involvement more directly of politics in the setting of basic prices. But economic historians are likely to agree that the period 1789-1914 was marked by two-and-a-half long relative-price cycles in raw material versus manufactured goods (see Figure 4.1). Although he had several predecessors, N. D. Kondratieff, a Russian economist who was immortalized by Joseph Schumpeter as the discoverer of the Kondratieff cycle or long wave, identified, dated, and discussed analytically this long cycle in the interwar years. He died in one of Joseph Stalin's labor camps in Siberia. The approximate dates and length of these long cycles through 1920 are shown in Table 4.1. The successive phases of falling and rising relative prices continued to follow one another despite two world wars, a pathological interwar period, and an unexpected postwar recovery, illustrated in Table 4.2. The peak of the early 1980s came in the second quarter of 1982 (or, on an annual basis, in 1981).
