This chapter examines the educational outcomes of pupils from Muslim families in Scotland and the forms of capital mobilised by their parents to achieve social mobility through education. Over recent decades, the experiences of Muslims in Scotland and the rest of the UK have been very mixed. On the one hand, Muslims have sometimes been seen as a security threat and a challenge to social cohesion (Commission on Integration and Cohesion, 2007). On the other hand, the UK Government has taken the lead across Europe in passing equality legislation relating to protected characteristics, including race and religion/belief. Systems have also been put in place for gathering and analysing administrative data to investigate the implementation of equality policies.Less

In assessing the adult tradition, one is required to go beyond educational success. One should also look for wider social aims and aspirations. This chapter proposes to do this by breaking down the tradition into its component parts and considering in turn the educational achievements. The spirit of learning for learning's sake which Oxford and Cambridge have always kept alive must be planted in the new centres if the universities are to extend their influence as well as their teaching. The Oxford tradition was premised on the belief that the future belonged to the workers.Less

This chapter examines the issue of poverty and education in Northern Ireland (NI) and how the particular economic, social, political, and educational challenges associated with NI following the Troubles (1968-1998) are viewed as inextricably entangled in this region of the United Kingdom. After briefly outlining the relatively recent and current political and policy landscapes, it goes on to consider patterns of demography, poverty and deprivation and educational achievement and how these link to segregation and issues of difference. The chapter then draws on a major, largely qualitative study that was undertaken in NI, Investigating Links in Achievement and Deprivation (ILiAD), in order to illustrate how any simple statistical correlation of deprivation and educational achievement plays out here in a much more complex nuanced manner.Less

This book provides the first detailed scholarly study of culture and sociability in Colombia during the period c.1850 and 1930. It gives a vivid picture of some of the factors that reduced social distances in the province of Antioquia during this period of relative harmony and prosperity. It examines hundreds of groups and voluntary associations that flourished at this time and that brought a growing number of Antioqueños of different social backgrounds together around religious practices and societies, the exercising of charity, a concern for education, and the pursuit of cultural progress. It describes the crucial role played by religion and the Catholic Church, which underwent considerable growth after the turbulent period of mid-19th century liberal reforms until the end of the conservative era in 1930, and traces the progress of parishes, devotional associations, religious communities, private and public religiosity, and numerous philanthropic societies, all of which brought about the bonds between the classes. The book examines achievements in education and the emergence of a thriving gamut of literary groups, public libraries, social clubs, and other associations created to promote public instruction, pedagogy, manners, temperance, ‘cultivated’ music, and moral improvement. The description of social and cultural dynamism, set against the background of growing religiosity, challenges the seldom-discussed assumption that religion slowed down social and cultural modernisation. Primary evidence, drawn from extensive research in proceedings and reports by groups, associations, periodical publications, statistics, diaries and memoirs, travellers’ accounts, books of etiquette, genre literature and other contemporary publications, as well as visual images, particularly photographs, document important topics that have in the past attracted little attention from scholars.Less

This chapter discusses the great importance of cultural dissonance between Haitian youth and Haitian adults, between Haitian youth and school personnel, and between Haitian youth and other southern Florida youth, to Haitian students. Haitian students consider the cultural dissonance as more important than their grades, test scores, and, for some, even going on to college. The chapter explains that Haitians, along with West Indians, perceived discrimination far more than other CILS students. They were more likely to claim they did not know their native language, although ethnographic data indicate they did indeed understand and speak Haitian Creole. Haitian youth in southern Florida are undergoing powerful transformations. They move toward adopting less-assimilated labels, their behavior reflects more Americanization, particularly African American styles. The educational achievements of Haitian youth indicate that a few of them are likely to remain aware of their Haitian heritage.Less

This chapter looks at what works to help young people overcome the barriers to Safe Passage. It summarizes the lessons learned about program components and compiles those factors that successful programs appear to have in common. It organizes the factors compiled at four different levels: individual, family, school, and community. Success factors at the individual level include early intervention, one-on-one attention, and youth empowerment. Those at the family include parental involvement and reaching across generations. Factors at the school level are educational achievement, effective principals, on-site facilitators, social skills training, group counseling, and community service. Success factors at the community level involve the location in the community, community outreach, cultural responsiveness, community police, safe havens, financial incentives, multiagency multicomponents, food, residential care, and intensive and long-term involvement in a program.Less

Academic Profiling focuses on the schooling experiences and relationships between the two fastest growing groups in the United States—Asian Americans and Latinas/os. At a time when politicians and pundits debate the sources of an achievement gap, Academic Profiling turns our attention to students, teachers, and parents to learn about the opportunity and social gaps within schools. In candid and at times heart-wrenching detail, students in a California public high school share stories of support and neglect on their paths to graduation. Separated by unequal middle schools and curriculum tracking, students are divided by race/ethnicity, class, and gender. While those in an International Baccalaureate Program boast about socratic classes and stress release-sessions, students outside of such programs bemoan unengaged teaching and inaccessible counselors. Labeled “the elite,” “regular,” “smart,” or “stupid,” students encounter differential policing and assumptions based on their abilities. These disparities are compounded by the growth in the private tutoring industry where wealthier families can afford to spend thousands of dollars to enhance their children’s opportunities, furthering an accumulation of privileges. However, in spite of the entrenchment of inequality in today’s schools, Academic Profiling uncovers multiple forms of resilience and the ways that students and teachers are affirming identities, creating alternative spaces, and fostering critical consciousness. As the story of this California high school unfolds, we also learn about the possibilities and limits of change when Gilda L. Ochoa shares the research findings with the high school.Less

This chapter examines the aspiration and suburbanisation of ethnic minority groups in East London, England. It argues that the concept of aspiration underwent something of a rediscovery in the New Labour renaissance, when Tony Blair, Peter Mandelson, and Gordon Brown found common ground in asserting that individual aspiration was not a dirty word but a key part of the New Labour project. The chapter explains that ethnic minorities consider aspiration and educational achievement as a key part of the process of upward social mobility.Less

This chapter links the black–white achievement gap to racial segregation and analyzes the capacity of the US policymakers, including the justice system, to tackle the problem. It takes as a starting point the observation that US courts seem to have concluded that residential segregation is no longer de jure but entirely de facto, the product not of government policy but of individual choice about where to live. By examining a wide array of social policies, the chapter shows that de jure segregation and its effects are extremely alive and well and belie assumptions about de facto segregation embedded in major court decisions on school desegregation.Less

This chapter presents the research evidence that supports the development of three new environmental categories — environmental comfort, environmental management, and environmental distress — which is illustrated through in-depth analysis of eight case studies conducted with older people living in deprived urban neighbourhoods of Manchester, England, and Vancouver, Canada. It aims to clarify some of the factors that underpin older people's desire to age in place despite multiple risks presented in their environment and conversely why others reject ageing in place. It provides a summary of the key characteristic of the research participants in two cities. This profiles the sample in relation to such factors as gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, health status, housing tenure, educational achievement, and rating of quality of life.Less

The chapter describes the link between educational experiences and early outcomes in the labour market, with a strong focus on the gender differences in the choice of subjects studied by girls and boys at school and university. Following a life stage approach, the chapter takes us through the stages girls and boys go through in moving from education to the labour market. The authors provide evidence on the educational achievement of girls and boys, including higher educational achievement, but also apprenticeships, and the effect these have on gender differentials in the labour market (specifically employment and pay) soon after leaving education.Less

More
In digitally connected middle-class households with school-going children, from toddlers through varsity students, the practice of transcendent parenting has arisen. Smartphones and other mobile devices virtually accompany families through all aspects of their everyday existence. The growing sophistication of mobile communication has unleashed a proliferation of apps, channels, and platforms that link parents to their children and key institutions in their lives. Throughout every stage of their children’s development, from infancy to adolescence to emerging adulthood, mobile communication plays an increasingly critical role in family life. Transcendent parenting has emerged in light of significant transformations in the mobile media landscape that allow parents to transcend many realms: the physical distance between them and their children, their children’s offline and online social interaction spaces, as well as timeless time that renders parenting duties ceaseless. In mobile communication, parents parent all over and all of the time, whether their children are by their side or out of sight. Drawing on experiences of urban middle-class families in Asia, this book shows how transcendent parenting embodies and conveys parenting priorities in these households. Paramount are the inculcation of values in their children, oversight of children to protect them from harm, adverse influences, and supporting their children in academic endeavors. It explores how mobile communication allows parents to be more involved than ever in their children’s lives but also questions whether parents have become too involved as a result. It further reflects on the consequences of transcendent parenting for parents’ well-being and children’s personal development.

This chapter enunciates how mobile media have engendered the conditions for transcendent parenting practices to emerge, thereby transforming family life in Asian urban middle-class households. It argues that although mothers generally seem to be more involved in their transcendent parenting duties, a more desirable state of shared transcendent parenting between fathers and mothers will ultimately alter the practice of transcendent parenting. It also discusses how the Singapore-focused transcendent parenting experiences in this book are relevant to urban middle-class societies in other parts of the world. Finally, it highlights the negotiation of the consequences of transcendent parenting.Less

This chapter reveals the intensification of a tutoring industry. Some students—primarily middle and upper middle class Asian American students–receive extensive tutoring in Chinese schools and from for-profit organizations. In contrast, many Latina/o students across class position receive no tutoring or limited tutoring. Such unequal access to tutoring fuels academic and social differences, and some teachers are even changing their curriculum in ways that benefit students with tutoring.Less
