What has been done to achieve fairer and more efficient education systems, and what more can be done in the future? This book provides a comprehensive examination of crucial policy areas for education, such as differential outcomes, the poverty gradient, and the allocation of resources to education, to identify likely causes of educational disadvantage among students and lifelong learners. This analysis is supported by 20 years of extensive research, based in the home countries of the UK and on work in all EU 28 countries, USA, Pakistan, and Japan. The book brings invaluable insights into the underlying problems within education policy, and proposes practical solutions for a brighter future.Less

This chapter describes Deno and Mirkin’s (1977) well-known Data-Based Program Modification manual. The manual’s main purpose was to detail an innovative and ambitious model of service delivery (Special Education Resource Teacher, or SERT) by which special educators’ roles would change to ensure an appropriate education for students with disabilities. Although formulated more than three decades ago, this SERT model addresses important issues and problems that resonate today. This review serves in part as an example of the sometimes cyclical nature of educational policy discussions. It also illustrates the informed, innovative, and practical thinking that has often been demonstrated by the special education community.Less

The pedagogy of jazz continues to evolve. Changes in the art form itself, the gradual development of jazz education resources and techniques, the ubiquitous availability of historically significant recordings in the digital age, and other factors play roles in this continued evolution. However, many longstanding pedagogical theories of what constitutes effective instruction are shown to be true for generation after generation of music students. This chapter outlines practical, effective teaching techniques applied to twenty-first-century jazz ensemble instruction. Topics explored in this chapter include rehearsal plan development; effective communication skills; techniques to ensure student engagement; rehearsal technique; the value of role modeling; and strategies for offering direction and teacher feedback in a manner that will be best received by today’s students, through use of specific language in one’s critiques.Less
