This review examines contemporary globalization and economic flows and the impact of these forces on land-use transitions. It finds that the contemporary period of globalization is defined by an integrated global system and massive flows of trade, finance, and investments. The global conditions, including these flows, are both indirect and direct drivers of land-use and land-cover change. The resultant global land-use system dynamics have shifted in well-defined ways, including the speed, direction, location, and timing of land-use transitions. Studying the contemporary global system of land use and land cover requires new models capable of tracing the sources and effects of globalization and economic flows. This chapter discusses Franklin’s young adult and middle years, when he was involved with Pennsylvania politics and learning strategies for political negotiation. During these years Franklin carefully developed a socioeconomic view supporting both free trade and a politics of imperialism. This chapter discusses Franklin’s A Modest Enquiry into the Nature and Necessity of a Paper-Currency, among other of his writings, relating Franklin’s views to well-known writers on economic and civil matters. For someone of his relative youth and inexperience, Franklin developed a fairly sophisticated theory of economics that included an investigation of several viable economic processes, including the idea of foreign-paid incomes and the effects of economic elasticity based in an analysis of a specie-flow, supply-demand mechanism. His aim was to show the impact of trade on local agriculture, construction, and merchant activities.Less

This chapter outlines key concepts and methods being used to construct National Transfer Accounts (NTAs), an accounting system for measuring intergenerational transfers at the aggregate level in a manner consistent with National Income and Product Accounts. National Transfer Accounts provide estimates of economic flows across age groups that arise primarily because children and the elderly consume more than they produce, relying on reallocations from the working ages. The chapter also compares the life cycles and support systems of Taiwan and the United States. The support systems for children are very similar in the United States and Taiwan. Almost all of the financial resources available to those under the age of twenty consist of transfers. In the United States, about 60 percent and in Taiwan about 75 percent of all transfers to children are familial transfers. The remainder consists largely of public transfers, of which support for public education is particularly important.Less

Chapter 6 discusses the economic logic of cross-border relations. To illustrate the economic dynamics of borderland state building as a result of economic asymmetry between Myanmar and its two more powerful neighbors, this chapter mainly examines two interrelated processes. The first is cross-border movement of goods and people between China, Myanmar, and Thailand. The chapter specifically examines the phenomenon of labor migration from Myanmar to Thailand, as well as the integrated trade networks across the borderland. It also discusses cross-border resource development dominated by Chinese as well as Thai capital in Myanmar. Here it mainly looks at agribusiness as well as investment in the hydropower, lumber, and mining sectors in Myanmar’s Kachin and Shan states.Less

The conclusion summarizes the chapters in the book through comparing and contrasting how taco truck owners employ their mobility to navigate culturally and politically distinct urban environments. It addresses the ways in which taco trucks alter streetscapes through geographic concepts of the street and the economic flows of the capitalist city. Additionally, the chapter assesses issues of gentrification and the commodification of immigrant food-ways, as well as the way in which taste preferences transform the built environment. It demonstrates that by examining taco trucks, we can see that our ordinary landscapes and our humdrum, everyday routines are actually quite remarkable. Overall, the conclusion argues that taco trucks are prominent features of the American cultural landscape because they profoundly transform as well as reflect the ways neoliberal cities work.Less
