Although the alteration of fast scenes and slow sequels will provide some variety of pacing to any story, the speed will also be affected by additional factors such as viewpoint changes and the five modes of discourse. Maintaining the same pace throughout a story renders it monotonous and predictable. The five modes of discourse include narrative, dramatic scene action, dialogue, description, and factual exposition, and their advantages and disadvantages can be utilized to keep a story fast, engaging, and suspenseful whether in urban fantasy or a traditional epic quest.Less

As early as the 1920s Rodgers strove to create musicals in which songs were thoroughly integrated into a dramatic whole. In his finest efforts with Hart, including On Your Toes and Pal Joey, and in his first collaboration with Hammerstein, Oklahoma!, Rodgers often succeeded in making the songs flow naturally from the dialogue and express character. But it was not until Carousel that Rodgers created a thoroughly unified musical score which also achieved a truly convincing coordination (i.e., integration) between music and dramatic action.Less

This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this book, which is about role-theory and metatheatre. The book aims to establish that metatheatrical role-play forms the dramatic action of many Golden-Age works for the theatre, particularly works of comedy, and that this role-play permits a dramatic debate on the state and nature of society in seventeenth-century Spain. This chapter explores the different interpretations of the meaning of metatheatre and considers the implications of the overt artistry of the comedia nueva.Less
