In 1923, Otto published an essay entitled ‘Das Überpersonliche im Numinosum’, later translated as ‘The Supra-personal in the Numinous’, which contained information about his philosophical enquiry on matters of the divine personality. Although this essay was published only as the fifth appendix to The Idea of the Holy, exploring the aspects of this essay would be helpful since detailed scholarly notice of the essay is not available, and this lack of exegesis has to be addressed through thoroughly examining the texts. Also, since Otto's notion of holiness is indeed important for today's theism, we have to be able to draw attention to the relationship of the divine person with the numinous element of holiness.Less

This book presents a critical examination of the central contribution to the twentieth-century concept of holiness made by the German Protestant Rudolf Otto (1869–1937). Whereas Otto's work has usually been studied from a phenomenological perspective, this book is original in offering theological arguments for Otto's idea of the holy becoming an anchor concept of contemporary theistic discourse. The book analyses the scholarly context that shaped Otto's concept of holiness and, finding that the theological significance of the latter has been overlooked, discusses the relation of the numinous and the holy to the divine personality, morality, religious experience, and emancipatory theology.Less

Chapter 4 offered an answer to the hiddenness problem that depended on acceptance of a modest, but still robust doctrine of divine transcendence. But some will be inclined to resist that doctrine. The present chapter, therefore, sets aside that doctrine and offers an independent answer to the hiddenness problem. The chapter is devoted to explaining why divine love should not be identified with “ideal” human love. The upshot is roughly the same as that of Chapter 4, though by a different route: the hiddenness problem can get no rational purchase on us by way of philosophical reflection on our ordinary understanding of the nature of love. At best, the problem gains a foothold only through the negatively valenced love analogies that are suggested by certain characterizations of how God is behaving toward various kinds of people. The chapter concludes by briefly outlining how this latter issue will be addressed in subsequent chapters.Less
