This chapter discusses the “diasporic nostalgia”—a sense of longing and homesickness that nevertheless is patiently waiting until conditions have improved at home. There represents an “empire of the heart” which encompasses this longing and hope for improvement, as well as the interconnectedness of friends and family. As a matter of fact, diaspora has a lot of cultural significance, and figures prominently in black popular culture. By way of example, the Senegalese population in Italy have created their own distinctive musical styles to express that sense of diaspora and hope that, with the political climate in Senegal changing for the better, returning home might no longer be an indefinite possibility.Less
